CLEMENT KUMAH FROM LEIGH GUILTY OF SEXUAL OFFENCE ON BUS IN BOLTON
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Clement Kumah, a 46-year-old man from Leigh, has been found guilty of committing a serious and reprehensible sexual act in public. The incident occurred on December 31, 2012, aboard a number 36 bus traveling through Bolton, where Kumah engaged in a sexual act in front of a 15-year-old girl, who was a passenger at the time.According to court records, the act lasted approximately eight minutes and was witnessed by the young girl, who was only 15 years old at the time of the incident. The case was brought to trial at Bolton Crown Court, where a jury composed of nine men and three women deliberated for three hours before reaching a unanimous verdict of guilty. The court found that Kumah had engaged in sexual activity in the presence of a minor, an offence considered both serious and morally reprehensible.
Following the verdict, it was disclosed that Kumah had a prior criminal history. In 1996, he served a four-year prison sentence after being convicted of two counts of indecent assault against women. His criminal record also includes convictions for violence directed at a police officer and for causing actual bodily harm through assault.
The trial primarily focused on the issue of identity, as Kumah, who resides at Wateredge Close, Leigh, claimed that he was not the man depicted in CCTV images captured on the bus. These images were circulated in The Bolton News and eventually led to his arrest several months later. Despite his protests, the evidence against him was compelling.
The victim, now aged 16 but legally protected from being identified, was a passenger traveling from Bolton to Little Hulton on New Year’s Eve, 2012. Her testimony and the CCTV footage played a crucial role in establishing Kumah’s guilt.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Peter Davies addressed Kumah directly, emphasizing the gravity of the offence. He stated, “I regard this as a particularly serious and foul offence in front of a 15-year-old girl who was very affected by what happened. There will be an inevitable custodial sentence.” Kumah was remanded in custody overnight pending sentencing, which is scheduled to take place shortly.
This case has sparked widespread concern about public safety and the protection of minors in the community, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent such heinous acts from occurring in public spaces.
