CHRISTOPHER WYN JONES: DISABLED PAEDOPHILE FROM TONYPANDY SLASHED SENTENCE AFTER JUDGES SAY HE'S NOT DANGEROUS

In a significant legal development, Christopher Wyn Jones, a 61-year-old resident of Tonypandy, has seen his prison sentence considerably reduced following an appeal ruling that challenged the original assessment of his dangerousness. Jones, who has a long history of convictions related to the possession and distribution of child abuse images, was initially sentenced to a total of five years in prison, with an additional five years on extended licence, after being found in possession of indecent images and breaching a sexual offences prevention order.

The case dates back to January 2018 when Jones was convicted at Southwark Crown Court in London. The court heard that police investigations uncovered two disturbing films involving young girls on his iPad, alongside evidence that he had been actively contacting children online. Jones, who resides on High Street in Clydach Vale, admitted to possessing indecent images and breaching the court order, which was meant to prevent him from engaging in such activities.

However, in a surprising turn of events on Thursday, senior judges in an appeal court decided to reduce his sentence after ruling that it was incorrect to label Jones as a 'dangerous' individual. The judges emphasized that although Jones displayed an unhealthy interest in young girls, his medical condition, which resembles Parkinson’s Disease, significantly limited his mobility. As a result, he is confined to a wheelchair, which the court considered a crucial factor in assessing his potential threat to children.

Lord Justice Hamblen, speaking on behalf of the panel that included Sir John Royce and Judge Martyn Zeidman QC, stated that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) acknowledged the mistake made by the original sentencing judge in deeming Jones a significant risk of causing serious harm. The appeal judges pointed out that Jones’s inability to move freely and the fact that he could not physically meet children he contacted online substantially minimized the danger he posed.

Furthermore, the court found that the evidence presented during the original trial was insufficient to justify the dangerousness finding. Consequently, the court quashed the extended licence portion of his sentence, which means Jones will now be released on licence after serving approximately two and a half years in prison, rather than potentially serving double that time. Despite this reduction, the court clarified that there would be no further early release, and Jones’s overall sentence was adjusted to a standard determinate term of five years, with the expectation that he will serve half of that period.

In a related incident from January 2018, Jones was caught in a wheelchair at his home in Tonypandy after a carer noticed him deleting images from his iPad. The police investigation revealed that Jones had been attempting to remove incriminating material, which included graphic videos depicting acts of abuse against young girls. The police found the device during a search of his residence in October 2017, despite Jones claiming that all his electronic devices had previously been confiscated by authorities.

The court was informed that the videos contained disturbing content, illustrating heinous acts committed against young girls, and that Jones had lied to police about possessing such images. His criminal history concerning child abuse images dates back to 2007, highlighting a persistent pattern of offending. Prosecutor Andrew Davies described Jones as a determined individual with a clear predilection for engaging with young girls through online contact and viewing indecent material, which underscores the seriousness of his offenses and the importance of ongoing monitoring and legal oversight.
