CHRISTOPHER WHITING FROM IPSWICH CAUGHT WITH OVER 80,000 INDECENT CHILD IMAGES IN HORRIFIC CRIME SPREE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Ipswich, Christopher Whiting, a 53-year-old resident of Appleby Close, was found to have downloaded and stored an alarming number of indecent images of children, totaling more than 80,000 files. The case came to light in June of the previous year when police executed a search warrant at his home in Ipswich while he was on holiday in Cornwall. Upon his return, Whiting voluntarily attended a police station, where authorities seized his computer equipment. The seized devices contained a vast collection of illegal images, including prohibited content and extreme pornography, raising serious concerns about his activities.During the court proceedings at Ipswich Crown Court, it was revealed that Whiting had denied any sexual interest in children. However, he admitted to collecting what he described as “Little Sweetie” images—depictions of children under 16 posing naked, which he claimed he believed to be artistic. The court heard that the images and videos were downloaded over a period spanning from June 2015 to June 2018, indicating a sustained pattern of illegal activity.
Prosecutor Laura Kenyon outlined the severity of the case, stating that some of the images and videos found on Whiting’s devices belonged to the most serious category, Level A, which includes depictions of rape and torture of children. Specifically, police discovered 1,876 prohibited still images of children, along with one movie, as well as 594 extreme pornographic images and 32 movies. The evidence pointed to a disturbing collection that included both still images and videos, some of which depicted the most heinous forms of abuse.
In sentencing, Judge David Pugh acknowledged the gravity of Whiting’s actions. He was handed a 20-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time immediately but would be under supervision during this period. Additionally, Whiting was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work, participate in a 35-day rehabilitation program known as Horizon, and pay costs amounting to £450. The court also imposed a ten-year sexual harm prevention order, restricting his activities and requiring him to sign the sex offenders’ register for the same duration.
Judge Pugh emphasized the serious nature of the crimes, stating, “It is important you recognize these aren’t victimless crimes and it is because of people like you that children are put through abuse.” The case underscores the ongoing threat posed by individuals who exploit and harm children through the possession and distribution of such illegal content, and it highlights the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to combat these heinous crimes.
