CHRISTOPHER TAYLOR BANNED FROM BOURNEMOUTH CHURCHES AFTER BREACHES OF SEX OFFENCE ORDER

In a recent court appearance, Christopher Taylor, a 72-year-old man from Kings Park Drive in Bournemouth, faced serious allegations related to breaches of a sexual offences prevention order. The incident took place at St Andrew’s Church located on Florence Road in Boscombe, where Taylor was seen engaging in inappropriate conduct during church services, raising concerns about his compliance with legal restrictions.

According to court records, Taylor was found to have approached two children during a Remembrance Day service held on November 9, 2008. During this event, he was participating as a singer in the church choir. The prosecution, led by Anita Gibson-Lee at Bournemouth Crown Court, detailed that a 15-year-old girl, who was carrying a flag for St John Ambulance, was approached by Taylor. She was reportedly told that she was carrying the flag incorrectly, prompting intervention from her carers to prevent any further inappropriate contact.

Further incidents were reported on March 22 of the following year, during a Mother’s Day service. Witnesses observed Taylor approaching a 10-year-old boy and reprimanding him for leaving hymn books in the wrong place. These actions were considered breaches of the conditions set by his previous orders, which restrict him from having contact with minors and from leaving Dorset without notifying authorities.

In addition to these incidents, Taylor admitted to going on a church retreat in Wales without informing police of his whereabouts, which was another violation of his legal obligations. The court also heard about Taylor’s criminal history, including a five-year imprisonment in 1985 for indecent assault and a serious sexual offence. He was later sentenced to two years in prison in 1995 for perverting the course of justice, and in October 2005, he served four months for six breaches of the same prevention order.

Miss Gibson-Lee informed the court that the Diocese of Winchester has been contacted and is in the process of drafting a contract to ensure Taylor’s compliance with the conditions of his release. Despite these breaches, Taylor’s defence argued that he no longer intended to worship at St Andrew’s due to ongoing police harassment. He expressed his Christian faith, stating, “I’ve been a Christian all my life,” and claimed that he could not return to the church because “the police have poisoned my name there.”

Judge Christopher Harvey Clark QC decided to defer sentencing for six months, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with law enforcement. The judge stated, “I want you to show co-operation with the police. I believe that there should be no problems with you attending services which are not generally attended by children and would encourage you to return to your worshipping practice.” However, Taylor responded, indicating his reluctance to return, saying, “I can’t go back to St Andrew’s; the police have poisoned my name there.” The court’s decision highlights ongoing concerns about Taylor’s compliance with legal restrictions and the safety of minors in the community.
