CHRISTOPHER PENMAN CAUGHT IN GATESHEAD TRYING TO MEET 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL AT NEWCASTLE'S CENTRAL STATION
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming, Christopher Penman, a 28-year-old resident of Gateshead, was caught attempting to arrange a meeting with a girl he believed was only 13 years old.The incident unfolded in Newcastle city centre, specifically at the well-known Central Station, where Penman had planned to meet the young girl for sexual purposes.
Penman had engaged in a series of inappropriate communications, during which he sent explicit images of himself to what he thought was a minor.
Unbeknownst to him, he was actually communicating with a member of Total Exposure, a voluntary organization dedicated to monitoring and exposing online predators.
This organization operates by creating decoy profiles that mimic underage girls, complete with photographs and details, to lure potential offenders.
According to court proceedings, Penman had arranged to meet the girl at Central Station.
However, on the day of the planned meeting, he became anxious or perhaps deterred when he did not receive a reply to a text message, leading him to cancel the encounter at the last minute.
Despite this, his intentions had been clear, and the authorities acted swiftly once he was identified.
Judge Edward Bindloss presided over the case at Newcastle Crown Court, where he sentenced Penman to 16 months in prison.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating, “An organization called Total Exposure, a voluntary organization that polices parts of the internet, set up a decoy profile for a 13-year-old girl.
They placed a photograph of a 13-year-old girl and waited for somebody to initiate contact.
An adult running it would play the part of the 13-year-old girl in conversations if people initiated contact, to see if they were seeking sexual contact.” He further explained, “You did initiate contact with this person in full knowledge of their age because it was on the profile.
You initiated sexual conversation, you sent sexual images to her and solicited sexual images from her.” The court heard that the decoy profile was designed to appear sexually naive, which did not deter Penman from continuing communication with the supposed minor last month.
Penman, who resides on Tulip Street in Gateshead and has no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
Judge Bindloss described Penman’s actions as grooming behavior aimed at a sexual encounter, stating, “You were clearly grooming what you thought was a 13-year-old.
You were grooming them so you could meet up and have sexual intercourse with them.
It’s clear penetrative sexual intercourse was contemplated, it was referred to.
There were plans to meet up in Newcastle, you expected her to travel to your hometown.
There was talk of meeting at a hotel room for sexual contact.” Although the meeting did not take place, police traced Penman back to his home and arrested him.
As part of his sentence, he is required to sign the sex offenders’ register for the next ten years and has been issued an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
The court also noted that his actions have caused significant strain in his relationship with his pregnant partner, adding a personal dimension to the case and its repercussions.
