CHRISTOPHER HIGGINS FROM WREXHAM FACES JUSTICE OVER DOG'S SUFFERING

In a distressing case that has shocked the community of Wrexham, Christopher Higgins, born on 31 March 1965 and residing at Maes Hyfryd, New Rhosrobin, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to his dog, Scooby, during the period between July 8 and 22, 2017. Higgins, who has a history of compulsive gambling, deliberately neglected his pet’s urgent veterinary needs, leading to severe health deterioration.

According to court records, Scooby was suffering from a large, ulcerated tumour located in his left lumbar region, accompanied by a wound on his right side that was infested with maggots. The dog was also emaciated, showing signs of extreme malnutrition, and was suffering from fly strike in one of his ears. The condition of Scooby was so dire that it prompted concern from veterinary professionals and animal welfare authorities alike.

The court heard that Higgins’ wife, Sharon Lindsay, had provided him with money specifically intended for Scooby’s treatment. However, Higgins misused these funds, spending them on his gambling addiction instead of caring for his ailing pet. In a calculated act of deception, Higgins falsely claimed to have found Scooby collapsed at the roadside, hoping to elicit sympathy and prompt veterinary intervention.

He managed to flag down a passing veterinarian, leading Scooby to be taken to the nearby Daleside Veterinary Group. Unfortunately, due to the dog's critical condition and the absence of an owner willing or able to provide proper care, the veterinary staff decided that euthanasia was the most humane option. This decision was made in the best interest of the suffering animal, given the extent of his injuries and neglect.

The incident was reported to the RSPCA, which launched a public appeal for information. Through their investigation, Higgins and Lindsay were quickly identified as Scooby’s owners. The court was informed that Sharon Lindsay faced both physical and mental health challenges, which made it difficult for her to manage the situation or advocate for her pet’s welfare.

During the legal proceedings, Higgins expressed remorse and apologized for his dishonesty during the investigation. Magistrates’ chairman Andrew Stubbs acknowledged Higgins’ guilty plea and remorse, emphasizing that the defendant’s actions appeared to stem from incompetence rather than malicious intent.

Following the case, RSPCA Inspector Jenny Anderton described the situation as profoundly tragic. She highlighted the graphic images of Scooby’s tumour, which had become ulcerated and infested with maggots during the hot weather, leading to a severe infection. Inspector Anderton emphasized that Scooby was also found to be very thin, underscoring the extent of neglect he endured.

She expressed sadness that the case had reached such a tragic conclusion, noting that Scooby could not be saved due to the severity of his condition. Higgins was ordered to pay costs and charges totaling £535 and was disqualified from keeping dogs for three years, a ban that expired in January 2021. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect and cruelty.
