CHRISTOPHER HARTLEY TURNS VIOLENT IN HUDDERSFIELD M62 HORROR ATTACK

In May 2017, a terrifying incident unfolded on the M62 motorway involving Christopher Hartley, a known offender from Huddersfield, which nearly resulted in the deaths of two police officers.

The officers, Detective Constables Victoria Shelton and David MacFarlane of Cheshire Constabulary, had traveled to Hartley's residence in Huddersfield on September 7 of the previous year to carry out an arrest.

During the operation, authorities also seized various electronic devices, including mobile phones and laptops, which contained indecent images of children.

Hartley, aged 44, had previously admitted to possessing such material, and the items were confiscated as evidence.

After being handcuffed and placed in the police vehicle, Hartley was being transported back across the Pennines when the situation took a violent turn.

According to court testimony, the officers had initially interacted politely with Hartley, who had given no indication of impending violence.

However, as the vehicle was traveling in the fast lane near Scammonden, Hartley suddenly became aggressive.

He managed to undo his seatbelt and reached across the car to attack Det Con Shelton, striking her with the handcuffs.

Witnesses and court reports describe how Hartley grabbed her head, forcing it to the side of the vehicle, and then physically assaulted her.

Det Con Shelton struggled to maintain control of the vehicle as Hartley continued his assault, punching her and attempting to gouge her eyes with his fingers.

The court heard that Hartley was screaming, growling, and behaving like a 'caged animal' during the attack, which left the officers fearing for their lives.

Despite the chaos, Det Con Shelton was able to steer the car onto the hard shoulder and bring it to a stop.

The violence did not cease there; Hartley then turned his aggression toward Det Con MacFarlane, who was seated in the back with him.

Hartley gnawed on his own arm and spat a piece of flesh at Det Con Shelton, all while still screaming and growling.

Other officers arrived at the scene shortly after, and both officers sustained injuries that forced them to take months off work.

They are still undergoing counseling to cope with the trauma inflicted during the attack.

Det Con MacFarlane required surgery on his arm and now bears a permanent scar.

Additionally, he underwent blood tests after a HIV testing kit was found at Hartley's home, which caused him significant concern about potential infection.

The police investigation uncovered more than 2,000 indecent images of children stored on Hartley's electronic devices.

Hartley pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, two counts of attempting to do so, and eight counts related to possession of indecent images.

He has a prior conviction for child sex offences.

During the court proceedings, Det Con Shelton delivered a heartfelt victim impact statement, describing her ongoing trauma.

She stated, “I no longer sleep.

I can only see the evil face that tried to kill me… coming towards me like a caged animal.

It was the worst day of my life and I thought it would be the last day of my life.

I have been a police officer for 20 years and I did not know how hard it was to be a victim of crime.

I begged for my life that awful day and Hartley ignored me.

In my head I said goodbye to my three beautiful daughters.

I wonder what would have happened if Hartley had succeeded in taking control that day.

It could have been pure carnage.” Det Con MacFarlane also shared his fears, saying, “The thought of how easily our lives could have ended that day is frightening.” Judge James Spencer, QC, sentenced Hartley to 14 years in prison, describing his behavior as animalistic and emphasizing the narrow escape from catastrophe.

The judge remarked, “It is a mercy that there was not some catastrophe.

You behaved like an animal.”
