CHRISTOPHER GEORGE'S SENTENCE REDUCED IN SNEINTON CHILD SEX CASE

In a recent development in a disturbing case originating from Sneinton, Nottingham, the 41-year-old offender Christopher George has seen his prison sentence significantly reduced following an appeal by his legal representatives. Originally sentenced to 19 years at Nottingham Crown Court in February 2013, George was convicted of a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of two young children. His crimes included multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and grooming, which spanned over several years and involved a pattern of predatory behavior.

George’s initial sentence was composed of a 17-year term for the abuse inflicted upon his first victim, with an additional two years added consecutively for offenses committed against a second child. The severity of his crimes was underscored by the fact that he used one of his victims as a means to satisfy his sexual desires, and he engaged in grooming behaviors with the other, indicating a calculated and manipulative pattern of abuse.

However, during the hearing at London’s Criminal Appeal Court, presided over by Lord Justice Laws, Mr Justice Globe, and Mr Justice Jay, the original sentence was challenged. The judges agreed that the 19-year term was, in their view, excessive given the circumstances. They determined that the sentence for the offenses against the second victim should have been served concurrently rather than consecutively, which would have resulted in a shorter overall term.

Lord Justice Laws commented on the case, stating, “In the interests of justice the sentence for the sexual offences against the primary victim had to be at the top of the range, or beyond. The guilty plea was not tendered at the first opportunity and the victims had to wait until he owned up to what they knew he had done.” He further explained that although the offenses were serious, persistent, and involved grooming a second victim, the total sentence was deemed too lengthy. As a result, the court reduced George’s sentence to 17 years in total.

Back in February 2013, the case had already garnered significant attention, with George being described as a “despicable and dangerous” child abuser. His crimes, which spanned over eight years, involved the sexual exploitation of a young child, and he also admitted to causing a second child to engage in sexual activity. The sentencing was met with condemnation from authorities and the community alike.

Detective Sergeant Daniel Bebbington of Nottinghamshire Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Unit expressed his sentiments following the sentencing, emphasizing the gravity of George’s crimes. “This sentence reflects the despicable crimes committed by a dangerous sexual offender. The victims have been through a living nightmare. Hopefully, this result is the start of a new chapter for them,” he said. He also praised Detective Constable Clare Easter for her diligent work in the investigation, highlighting her tireless efforts to gather evidence and support the victims.

Despite George’s initial guilty plea, the lengthy investigation and overwhelming evidence against him led to his eventual admission of guilt. The victims are currently receiving support from Imara, an organization dedicated to helping children who have experienced abuse, ensuring they receive the necessary psychological and emotional assistance to aid their recovery.
