COATBRIDGE MAN CHRISTOPHER DOCHERTY FACES JAIL OVER CHILD ABUSE IMAGES

In September 2014, a man from Coatbridge, Christopher Docherty, was brought before Airdrie Sheriff Court to face serious allegations related to the possession and creation of indecent images depicting the sexual abuse of young children. The case drew significant attention due to the disturbing nature of the evidence presented and the implications for community safety.

Docherty, aged 30 and residing on Hawick Drive in the Carnbroe area of Coatbridge, was convicted by a unanimous verdict after a rigorous one-week trial. The court heard detailed testimony from police officers and digital forensic experts, who examined Docherty’s computer and uncovered a disturbing collection of over 1,000 images. Among these were four images classified at the most severe and explicit level, indicating the highest degree of exploitation and abuse.

In addition to the still images, authorities found 61 video clips depicting children being subjected to sexual abuse. These offences were committed over a span of four years, from July 29, 2007, to August 2, 2011, at Docherty’s residence. The evidence painted a troubling picture of ongoing abuse and the extent of Docherty’s involvement in the creation and possession of such material.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Anne Frances Hilley, and the defense, represented by advocate Janice Green, presented their cases. The jury, after less than an hour of deliberation, found Docherty guilty of both charges—possession and creation of indecent images of children.

Following the conviction, Docherty appeared in court for sentencing. His defense counsel emphasized his status as a first-time offender and highlighted his active role in the local community, including involvement in football leagues. Janice Green argued that an extended custodial sentence was unnecessary, asserting that Docherty posed no ongoing risk to the public and that alternative measures could be appropriate. She also noted that Docherty continued to deny the charges.

Prosecutor Miss Hilley pointed out the high number of images and videos involved, acknowledging the severity of the case. Sheriff Robert Dickson, after considering the evidence and the arguments presented, decided to remand Docherty into custody temporarily while awaiting a comprehensive background report. Later, he released Docherty on bail, deferring sentencing until later in the month.

During the hearing, Sheriff Dickson expressed concern over Docherty’s denial of the offences, noting that Docherty had attempted to shift blame onto his brother and father, both of whom testified that they were not involved. The sheriff remarked on the seriousness of the images found on Docherty’s computer and indicated that, despite the possibility of an alternative to custody, the evidence warranted serious consideration.

As a result of his conviction, Docherty was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the potential risk to the community. The case remains a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding online exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable children from abuse.
