CHRISTOPHER DE BURTON SENTENCED TO 19 YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN TORQUAY

A man from Torquay has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after a jury found him guilty of a series of serious sexual offences committed against a young girl. Christopher De Burton, aged 67 and residing on Thurlow Road in Torquay, was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court on Friday, 24 January. The court's decision came after a trial during which De Burton was convicted of multiple charges, including indecency with a child, three counts of raping a girl under the age of 13, eight counts of sexual assault against a girl under 13, and on two separate occasions, causing a child to observe a sexual act.

De Burton’s criminal history is notable, as he is already classified as a sex offender due to previous convictions involving two other victims. The recent case revealed disturbing details about his abuse of the young girl, which spanned several years and took place at various locations across Devon. The court heard that De Burton repeatedly raped and molested the girl from a young age, with the abuse continuing until she reached the age of 12. In addition to the physical abuse, he also exposed the girl and her friend to pornography, further compounding the trauma inflicted.

Throughout the trial, De Burton maintained his innocence, denying all allegations and claiming that the accusations were fabricated. However, the jury dismissed his version of events, finding him guilty based on the evidence presented. The sentencing reflects the gravity of his crimes, with the court imposing a 19-year prison term, followed by an additional three years on extended licence, ensuring he remains under supervision upon release.

Detective Sergeant John Friskey, involved in the case, commented on the verdict, stating, “Christopher De Burton is a dangerous sexual offender who has now been convicted of the rape and sexual abuse of another young girl.” He expressed gratitude to the victims for their bravery and resilience, acknowledging their crucial role in bringing De Burton to justice. Sergeant Friskey emphasized the ongoing commitment of law enforcement to thoroughly investigate all sexual offences, regardless of when they occurred, reaffirming their dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals from predators like De Burton.
