DERBY OFFENDER CHRISTOPHER CAFFREY SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE COLLECTION
In July 2014, Christopher Caffrey, a 30-year-old man from Allestree, Derby, was sentenced to 14 months in prison for possessing over 100,000 child abuse images on his personal devices. The images, including 351 of the most severe category, were stored on two computers and a hard drive located in his home on Amber Road.
Derby Crown Court heard that some of these images were organized into folders named "Kinder Cutie," "Pre-teen Hardcore," and "Angel Ripper." Police discovered the material after serving a warrant at Caffrey's home, which required forcing open his locked bedroom door.
Prosecutor Alex Wolfsen stated that Caffrey was initially believed to be of good character and initially denied any wrongdoing following his arrest.
However, he later admitted guilt to five counts of possessing indecent images during court proceedings.
Recorder Adrian Redgrave commented on the severity of the case, saying, "In total there were more than 100,000 images of children.
If there were not a market for this sort of material, the chances would be far lower that children would be subjected to this sort of abuse." The police became aware of Caffrey's online activity in April of the previous year due to reports of his IP address being used to download illegal images.
They conducted a raid while he was on holiday.
Wolfsen explained, "Police attended his home and questioned his father about the matter.
They forced entry into Caffrey's locked bedroom, seized two computers, and a hard drive located under the TV in the living room, which analysis showed had been used for downloading between March 2007 and April 2013." Analysis of the images revealed that 351 were of the highest Category 5, 4,937 of Category 4, 5,744 of Category 3, 2,202 of Category 2, and a staggering 94,170 images of Category 1.
Defence solicitor Julie Warburton acknowledged Caffrey's remorse, stating, "He knows he has brought shame on his family and himself.
He even gave up his job to avoid embarrassing his employer." Along with his custodial sentence, Recorder Redgrave imposed a 10-year term on the sex offenders' register and issued a 10-year sexual offences prevention order against Caffrey.
