SHIPSTON WOMAN CHRISTINE WILKINSON BANNED FROM OWNING ANIMALS AFTER STARVING DOG TO DEATH IN WARWICKSHIRE
In a tragic case that has shocked the community of Shipston and the surrounding Warwickshire area, Christine Mary Wilkinson, aged 33, has been held accountable for the severe neglect and subsequent death of her pet dog, Minnie. The incident, which took place in May 2019, led to Wilkinson being sentenced on May 19th for causing unnecessary suffering to the bulldog, resulting in her being issued a lifetime ban on owning any animals.According to court reports, the discovery of Minnie’s body was made by a housing association officer who had accessed Wilkinson’s former residence on Marigold Road, Stratford. The officer was reportedly conducting an inspection when they found the dog’s remains. The body was located curled up in a plastic dog bed, covered with a blanket, in a state that indicated extreme neglect and suffering.
The officer described the condition of Minnie during the court hearing, noting that the dog appeared to be extremely emaciated. The veterinarian’s post-mortem examination revealed that Minnie’s ribs and hip bones were prominently visible, a clear sign of prolonged starvation. The dog’s curled-up position suggested she had died in her sleep, but the veterinary reports confirmed that her suffering was ongoing for weeks prior to her death.
Further evidence of neglect was found in the environment where Minnie was discovered. Large amounts of feces were present, indicating a lack of proper care and hygiene. The veterinary experts concluded that Minnie’s poor physical condition was the result of a gradual decline over several weeks, caused by starvation and dehydration. The mental anguish inflicted upon her was also highlighted, with vets noting that Minnie experienced significant stress and anxiety, likely due to her owner’s abandonment and neglect. The dog depended entirely on Wilkinson, and her trust was broken when she was left to suffer without intervention.
In addition to the disqualification order, Wilkinson received a 12-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 12 months. She was also ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activities and pay a total of £278 in costs and charges. Although she was banned from owning animals for life, Wilkinson has the right to appeal this decision after a period of 10 years.
This case has sparked outrage among local residents and animal welfare advocates, highlighting the importance of vigilance and responsibility in pet ownership. The tragic death of Minnie serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglect and the need for strict enforcement of animal protection laws in Warwickshire and beyond.
