CHRISTINE BOWE FROM CALNE FACES PROSECUTION OVER CRUELTY TO JACK RUSSELLS

In a case that has drawn significant concern from animal welfare advocates, Christine Bowe, a resident of Calne, was found guilty in 2016 of neglecting her five Jack Russell terriers by subjecting them to prolonged periods of muzzling, which caused them considerable discomfort and distress.

According to court reports, Bowe admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to one of her dogs, affectionately known as Piglet. She also failed to meet the basic needs of her other dogs—Milo, Rosie, Muffy, and Mr. Blobby—by misusing muzzles and neglecting to provide a suitable environment for their well-being. Her property in Calne was described as cluttered and chaotic, further indicating a neglectful environment for the animals.

The case was brought to the attention of the RSPCA after a dog was found wandering the streets of Calne wearing a muzzle. This incident prompted an investigation, and subsequent social media activity, including a Facebook post, led to the reunion of Bowe with her dog. Following this, RSPCA inspector Miranda Albinson visited her property and uncovered disturbing evidence of animal cruelty.

Inspector Albinson explained that the dogs had been subjected to extended periods of muzzling, which is not an appropriate or humane method to control unwanted barking or destructive behavior. She emphasized that muzzles must be properly fitted to prevent injury, pain, or distress, and should allow dogs to perform normal activities such as panting, breathing, vomiting, and drinking. The inspector also noted the presence of a gosling with an untreated broken beak, highlighting the neglect present on the property.

During the court proceedings, Bowe was fined a total of £200, which covered costs and penalties. Additionally, she was banned from keeping dogs for a period of five years, a ban that expired in 2021. The case underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for proper animal care standards in the Calne area.
