CHRISTIAN GRANT FROM HULL SEX OFFENDER RAPES 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN PEARSON PARK DAYS AFTER EARLY RELEASE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Hull community, Christian Grant, a 19-year-old known offender from Queens Road, Hull, was convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl in Pearson Park just four days after being released early from a young offenders' institution. The incident took place on July 7 of the previous year, and Grant’s actions have raised serious concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of early release policies for offenders with violent histories.According to court proceedings, Grant had been released on licence from a juvenile detention facility where he was incarcerated for threatening behaviour. Despite the conditions of his release, which explicitly prohibited contact with children under 16 and visits to parks or playgrounds in Hull or Hessle, Grant engaged in a heinous act that has left the community in shock. The court heard that Grant had supplied the young girl with amphetamines and vodka, which he used to manipulate her into a sexual encounter. The girl, described as vulnerable and immature by prosecutor James Sampson, was subjected to a brutal assault that has left lasting trauma.
During the trial at Hull Crown Court, it was revealed that Grant threatened to attack someone with a brick if the girl refused to comply with his demands. The girl recounted to police that Grant said he wanted sex, and when she refused, he threatened harm, saying, “He said he would go and hurt someone. He was throwing bricks. I had to do it or it would have got worse.” This chilling testimony underscores the level of intimidation and danger Grant posed.
Further details from the court indicated that Grant had a long history of violent and sexual offences. In June 2007, he was convicted of exposing himself to two 14-year-old girls. Earlier that same year, in April, he had sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl in a park, and in February of the previous year, he made threats to kill individuals. These prior convictions highlight a pattern of dangerous behaviour and a failure of the justice system to prevent further harm.
At the time of the assault, Grant was still under licence conditions, which mandated that he avoid contact with minors and refrain from visiting parks or playgrounds in Hull or Hessle. Despite these restrictions, he was released from prison on July 3 after serving only 18 days of a 40-day sentence, raising questions about the adequacy of sentencing and supervision.
Judge Roger Thorn QC addressed Grant directly during sentencing, emphasizing the severity of his criminal record and the threat he posed. He stated, “You have a terrible criminal history of previous sex offending and of making threats to kill. It is agreed you suffer from a psychotic disorder. You are a significant danger to the public.” As a result, Grant was ordered to be detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act and placed in a secure unit. Additionally, he was mandated to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and potential risk to the community.
