CAERPHILLY MAN AVOIDS JAIL AFTER ATTEMPTING TO ENGAGE WITH CHILD ONLINE
A man named Christian Fish, aged 37 and from Caerphilly, was handed a 24-month suspended sentence in Cardiff Crown Court after being found guilty of several serious offences. The court heard that Fish possessed indecent and prohibited images of children, attempted to communicate sexually with a minor, and was involved in indecent exposure. It was reported that Fish tried to engage in sexual chats with a 14-year-old girl known as 'Izzy,' who was actually an undercover police officer. According to court proceedings, on August 21st, Fish received a friend request on Snapchat from 'Izzy,' which he accepted. He then began a conversation over two days, during which he sent unsolicited explicit images of himself, including one sitting on the toilet with his genitals exposed, and another photo of his lower body with his genitals visible. Fish asked 'Izzy' to send a picture of herself, and the officer sent a teenage girl’s image. Fish also sent multiple videos showing himself performing sexual acts, and admitted that sending photographs to strangers on Snapchat turned him on. He further sent a video performing a sexual act in public, claiming that a woman had witnessed him doing it. Police traced the messages to Fish's IP address, arrested him, and seized several electronic devices, including three laptops, a USB stick, and his phone. These devices contained 49 Category A images, which involved children being violently sexually assaulted; 27 Category B images of children around two or four years of age; and three prohibited images of adult women edited to resemble children. Fish’s legal representative expressed remorse, acknowledging that the images depicted real children and the lasting trauma for victims. The judge, His Honour J Powell, recognized the potential for rehabilitation but emphasized that Fish narrowly avoided immediate custody, highlighting the gravity of his offenses and the need for community support and unpaid work as part of his sentence.
