CHARLES MURRAY OF COLCHESTER SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTED RAPE NEAR WHITEHALL CLOSE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Colchester, Charles Murray, a soldier stationed at Hyderabad Barracks, was sentenced to three years in prison for a heinous attempted sexual assault involving a 15-year-old girl. The incident unfolded on a day that was supposed to be a joyful outing for Murray and his wife, but instead turned into a criminal act that has left a lasting impact on the victim and the local community.According to court proceedings, Murray followed the teenage girl in his vehicle as she was walking near Whitehall Close. The girl, who was on her way to babysit for friends, noticed the car trailing her and soon after, the vehicle overtook her. When she drew level with the car, Murray made a disturbing remark claiming he had something for her. Witnesses saw him exposing himself, which added to the distress of the young girl. As she continued her walk, the car again overtook her, and this time, Murray exited the vehicle, approached her, and forcibly grabbed her in an attempt to carry out a sexual assault.
The girl, showing remarkable courage, managed to raise the alarm, which ultimately led to Murray being stopped in his car later. The court heard that the attack occurred only six weeks after Murray had gotten married. On the day of the incident, July 4, he was supposed to take his wife to the cinema, but instead, he engaged in this predatory behavior.
Murray, aged 21, admitted to the charge of attempted rape and also pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent exposure involving the girl. The prosecution accepted pleas of not guilty to other charges, including indecently assaulting the girl and two additional counts of indecent exposure. During the trial, Andrew Bailey, representing Murray, expressed that his client bitterly regretted his actions. The court was informed that Murray would face dismissal from the Army as a consequence of his conduct.
In addition to the prison sentence, Murray was ordered to remain on the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years. The judge’s decision underscores the severity of the crime and the community’s need for protection from such dangerous behavior. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the devastating impact of sexual crimes on young victims and their families.
