CHARLES LAW FROM WORKINGTON FOUND GUILTY OF SEXUAL ABUSE OF UNDERAGE GIRL IN CUMBRIA
In a serious case that has shocked the community of Workington, Charles Law, a 74-year-old resident of Newlands Lane, was convicted of multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of a minor girl. The verdict was delivered by a jury at Carlisle Crown Court after a thorough trial that lasted several days.Law faced six separate charges, all stemming from incidents that occurred between 2011 and 2012. These included four counts of sexual touching and two counts of attempting to incite the girl into engaging in sexual activity. The court heard detailed accounts of how Law inappropriately touched his young victim and also encouraged her to participate in similar conduct.
The victim, whose identity remains protected, confided in her mother about the abuse, prompting her to report the matter to the police. Following the allegations, law enforcement officials conducted interviews with the girl, which formed a crucial part of the evidence presented in court.
Throughout the proceedings, Law maintained his innocence, denying all charges brought against him. His legal representative, Kim Whittlestone, argued that the allegations were fabricated and insisted that the incident had not occurred, suggesting that the victim had made false accusations.
After deliberating, the jury, composed of 12 members, unanimously found Law guilty of all six offences. The jury foreman conveyed the verdict directly to Judge Barbara Forrester, who presided over the case. As part of the court's sentencing procedures, Law was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register, a legal requirement for individuals convicted of such crimes.
Law is scheduled to return to court on Friday, May 10, for sentencing, where additional reports will be considered before a final judgment is issued. The case has brought to light the importance of safeguarding minors and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat sexual offenses within the community of Workington and the wider Cumbria region.
