CHARLES HALL FROM HAWORTH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In November 2018, Charles Hall, a 58-year-old train guard from Haworth, was sentenced to serve two years and four months in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing a teenage girl aged 15. The case revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming and inappropriate conduct that spanned several months, during which Hall manipulated and exploited the young girl.

Hall, who resided on Fallwood Street in Haworth, had developed an infatuation with the girl, which led him to engage in a series of grooming behaviors. He communicated with her frequently through Facebook Messenger, sending messages that gradually built a sense of trust and intimacy. Over time, Hall arranged to meet her on multiple occasions, during which he committed acts of sexual misconduct.

Specifically, the court heard that Hall had touched the girl’s naked breasts on one occasion, while on another, the girl herself engaged in indecent contact with him. These encounters were part of a broader pattern of grooming, which included the taking of indecent photographs of the victim. The images and conversations were discovered after police seized Hall’s work phone, which revealed inappropriate Facebook messages and indecent images of the girl.

Hall’s employment as a train conductor for Trans Pennine Express was a point of concern during the investigation. The authorities first became aware of his misconduct after a colleague observed him videoing himself at a urinal at work. Further concerns arose when another colleague overheard Hall using sexually inappropriate language towards the girl during a video call in the staff mess room. These incidents prompted a police investigation, leading to the seizure and examination of Hall’s phone.

During the court proceedings at Bradford Crown Court, it was revealed that Hall had no prior convictions. His defense lawyer, Mark Brookes, emphasized that Hall expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged the distress caused to the girl. Despite this, the judge, Mr. Justice David Hatton QC, emphasized the seriousness of the case, particularly noting the significant age difference of over 40 years between Hall and the victim as an aggravating factor.

In his sentencing, Judge Hatton ordered Hall to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years and imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, also lasting seven years. The judge highlighted that Hall’s infatuation with the girl and his grooming behavior, including the taking of indecent photographs, were indicative of a calculated attempt to manipulate her with a view toward a sexual relationship. The case underscores the dangers of grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable minors from exploitation.
