CHARLES COOK FROM CHELTENHAM SENTENCED TO NINE AND A HALF YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRL

In a case that has shocked the community of Cheltenham, Charles Cook, a 62-year-old man from Midwinter Avenue, St Paul's, was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for a series of serious sexual offenses committed against a teenage girl. The court proceedings revealed the disturbing details of Cook's actions, which spanned over a period during which he subjected the young victim to a relentless campaign of sexual abuse.

During the trial at Gloucester Crown Court, the victim, a teenage girl, was present in the courtroom, clutching her teddy bear as she watched the sentencing. The court heard that last month, Cook was found guilty of seven charges related to sexual assault and engaging in sexual activities with the girl. Despite the conviction, Cook had maintained his innocence on three counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual activity, and two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual acts, all alleged to have occurred within the same timeframe.

Judge William Hart, presiding over the case, emphasized that he was taking into account Cook's lack of prior convictions and his history of hard work throughout his life. Cook was described as someone who had contributed to the community by working outdoors for local councils and on farms. The judge also acknowledged that Cook was of borderline low intelligence, suggesting that he might not have fully comprehended the severity of his actions at the time.

In addition to the prison sentence, Judge Hart imposed an indefinite sexual offences prevention order on Cook, along with a lifetime requirement for him to register as a sex offender. These measures are intended to monitor and restrict Cook's activities following his release from prison.

The court was informed that Cook had previously told his wife that he intended to "find a younger model," indicating a troubling attitude towards women. The prosecution detailed how Cook had allegedly used manipulation, pressure, and even physical coercion to force the girl into compliance with his sexual advances. It was also reported that Cook sometimes rewarded her with money to maintain her cooperation.

The case came to light when the girl confided in a social worker last year, revealing that Cook had been touching her and that she wanted the abuse to stop. This disclosure prompted an investigation that ultimately led to Cook's arrest and subsequent conviction.

During the court proceedings, Cook's defense solicitor, Andrew Hobson, acknowledged the gravity of the allegations. He stated that Cook was aware of the seriousness of the charges and was prepared to accept a lengthy custodial sentence. The court was also informed by a psychologist that Cook was assessed as being "on the borderline in relation to learning difficulties and very low in IQ," which the defense argued might have affected his understanding of his actions.
