CARRIE-ANN FOTHERGILL BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS AFTER HORRIFIC NEGLECT IN BOSTON

In a case that has shocked the local community of Boston, Carrie-Ann Fothergill, a single mother-of-four born around 1987 and residing on Sutterton Grove, was found guilty of severe neglect towards her pet dogs, Coke and Mitzy. The conviction stems from a distressing incident in March 2017, when the RSPCA responded to a call from a concerned member of the public reporting the dire condition of the two Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

When RSPCA inspector Rebecca Harper arrived at Fothergill's residence, she was confronted with two dogs in a state of significant neglect. Coke, the dog on the left, was suffering from a swollen toe that initially appeared to be caused by an ingrowing nail. However, further examination revealed a more serious issue: an untreated tumour, which necessitated the amputation of one of her toes. The dog was also suffering from a heavy parasite burden, which had led to anaemia and dehydration, requiring immediate treatment with IV fluids at the veterinary clinic. Additionally, Coke was found to have severe dental disease, further highlighting the extent of her neglect.

Mitzy, the other dog, was suffering from an untreated skin condition and a flea infestation. These issues had resulted in hair loss and untreated ear infections, indicating a prolonged period of neglect and lack of proper care. Despite the severity of their initial conditions, both dogs received extensive treatment and care from the RSPCA, and they have since made a full recovery.

Fothergill’s failure to meet the basic needs of her pets and her neglectful attitude towards their health and wellbeing led to her being brought before the courts. The sentencing included a three-year conditional discharge, a fine of £320, and a significant ban on keeping animals for ten years, which will expire in October 2027. The case has drawn attention to the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of neglecting vulnerable animals in the Boston area.
