CAROLYN ASHTON GIVEN SENTENCE IN SHEFFIELD FOR ANIMAL ABUSE
Carolyn Ashton, born on March 14, 1971, and residing at 40 Otley Walk, Sheffield S6 3PX, was convicted in 2019 of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog. The incident involved Ashton kicking and dragging the terrified animal, which left the dog frightened and crying. She admitted to the charges after being caught mistreating the dog in the street near McDonald's on Penistone Road, Sheffield. Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard that Ashton was seen repeatedly kicking the dog and behaving in a disorderly, drunken manner. Witnesses reported that she was with the dog at the time.
Rob Coyne, prosecuting, explained: “On July 20, in the early hours, police were called to McDonald’s on Penistone Road to assist security with an aggressive female, who was identified as the defendant. She was seen kicking the dog multiple times and was described as intoxicated and disorderly. The dog was seized and appeared in poor condition, frightened and crying.”
The dog was examined by a veterinarian, who noted that it was in a very poor state, covered in fleas, and in one of the worst flea cases he had encountered. Ashton pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal by kicking and dragging it by its lead, and also to failing to seek veterinary care for the dog.
Additionally, she admitted to being drunk and disorderly outside McDonald's. For her actions, she received a community order lasting until September 2020, including a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement. She was fined £25, ordered to pay a £90 victim surcharge, and £85 in costs. It was not disclosed whether she was banned from keeping animals or if the dog was returned to her.
