CARL KNOWLES FROM DAGENHAM SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO PONY IN HORRIFIC CASE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Dagenham, Carl Knowles, born around 1989 and residing at 111 Halbutt Street, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a young pony named Max. The incident came to light after authorities responded to a distress call and discovered the severely neglected animal in a state of extreme weakness and suffering.

On December 14, 2020, RSPCA inspector Jessica Dayes, along with animal rescue officer Rebecca Yarrow, joined police officers in Harlow to investigate reports of animal cruelty. Their efforts led them to Max, an 18-month-old gelding, who was found collapsed and unable to stand. Inspector Dayes described the scene, noting that the pony was lying on the ground with his front legs tucked beneath his body, showing clear signs of severe distress and physical deterioration.

Further examination revealed that Max’s hips and spine were prominently visible, indicating extreme emaciation. Behind him, a pile of feces suggested he had been in the same position for an extended period. Although bread was placed before him, it was wet and remained uneaten, and the only available water was muddy and contained in a purple bucket. The condition of the pony was so dire that he was immediately seized by police and transported to an animal hospital for urgent care.

Veterinary assessment confirmed the severity of Max’s condition. He was administered pain relief, but the injuries sustained were extensive. Open pressure sores were present on both elbows and between his front legs, with deep ulcerated wounds on his limbs and elbows. The veterinarian’s prognosis was grim, and on humane grounds, Max was euthanized to prevent further suffering.

Inspector Dayes expressed her dismay at the situation, stating, “The vet report stated it was unacceptable for any equine to be left collapsed, without the ability to move freely for days without seeking further professional advice. The emaciation should also have been investigated and treated. Appropriate treatment should have been sought for the pain and discomfort caused by the wounds. All of Max’s conditions should have led any reasonable owner to seek immediate veterinary care.”

During the court proceedings, Knowles attempted to justify his actions by claiming that he had called a veterinarian but was unable to afford the treatment costs. Despite this mitigation, the court found him guilty of causing unnecessary suffering.

He was sentenced to an 18-week prison term, which was suspended for 12 months. Additionally, Knowles was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid community service, pay costs and charges amounting to £628, and was disqualified from keeping animals for a period of 10 years. He also cannot appeal this decision. This case has raised serious concerns about animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners in the Dagenham area, highlighting the importance of timely veterinary intervention and proper care for animals.
