CARL BURGER AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN LIVERPOOL ROYAL HOSPITAL
A man named Carl Burger has been sentenced to three years in prison after committing heinous sexual offences against two women in Liverpool, incidents that have shook the local community and highlighted ongoing concerns about the safety of vulnerable individuals. The first offending took place in August 2022 at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, a major healthcare facility in the city.
At that time, an elderly female patient was in the accident and emergency unit, waiting in a cubicle for her medical attention.
It was during this period that Burger, aged 55 and residing on Fenwick Street in Liverpool, entered her privacy space under false pretenses, claiming to be a doctor.
This deception was part of an attempt to gain access to her while she was vulnerable.
Once inside the cubicle, Burger committed the disturbing act by sexually assaulting the 81-year-old woman.
Her peaceful wait for treatment was shattered by his intrusion and assault.
The situation took a swift turn when a nurse entered the same cubicle and saw Burger in an inappropriate situation.
Confronted by the nurse, Burger attempted to leave the scene, but he was quickly detained by her, aided by other staff members and security personnel present in the hospital.
Authorities were promptly called, leading to Burger’s arrest and subsequent charging with sexual assault related to this incident.
His actions did not occur in isolation, as it was revealed that just a few months earlier, in the early hours of the morning, Burger had committed another sexual assault, this time within a private residence in Liverpool.
The second victim, also a woman, had been asleep when she awoke to find him assaulting her.
She immediately raised the alarm, causing Burger to flee the scene.
Police responded swiftly, taking statements and charging him with the second sexual assault.
At Liverpool Crown Court in the following month, Burger pleaded guilty to both charges.
His guilty plea came as a relief to many, but the impact on the victims and their families was profound.
On October 21, 2023, he was formally sentenced to three years imprisonment.
The court also imposed a lifelong restraining order to prevent him from contacting the victims or approaching them.
Additionally, Burger was registered on the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
The court heard powerful victim personal statements from both women, emphasizing the devastating effects the assaults have had on their lives.
The elderly victim expressed her profound sense of vulnerability and grief, stating: "I am in the later stages of my life, a period where I should be carefree and just be able to enjoy being with my family.
Since this incident, however, I am more vulnerable than ever.
I feel I have lost my spark, and my family would also share those concerns.
I appear like I have just given up, defeated, and my family say they have lost the nan they know and love.
The male’s actions have not only had a profound effect on me but also on my family.
They fear the worst, and we hope that no other person has to suffer at the hands of this terrible male.
I cannot believe someone would do something so awful to a vulnerable person in need, and I hope this male is punished for what he has done." The younger victim, speaking about her experience, shared her ongoing fears: "I worry about him ever turning up at my address and worry that I will come across him again.
The incident has made me feel incredibly conscious and worried about everything.
At night I want every door to be locked and checked, as I worry that someone will creep into the house and do something to me." Legal representatives, including senior Crown Prosecutor Chris Fontaine from the CPS Mersey Cheshire RASSO unit, underscored Burger’s status as a serial sex offender who targeted vulnerable women in situations that heightened their vulnerability.
Fontaine expressed gratitude to the victims, their families, and hospital staff for their quick and decisive actions, which were instrumental in arresting Burger and bringing him to justice.
He concluded by highlighting the importance of community cooperation and the legal process in ensuring such offenders are held accountable.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing dangers posed by repeat offenders and the critical role of vigilant policing and support systems in protecting the most vulnerable members of society.
