CAMERON LONGSTAFF FROM CARLISLE JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND ONLINE BLACKMAIL

A young man with aspirations of becoming a police officer has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of serious child sex offences, including a disturbing attempt to blackmail a 12-year-old schoolgirl into sending him explicit images.

Cameron Longstaff, aged 20 and residing on Hurley Road, Little Corby, near Carlisle, was convicted of multiple charges following a detailed trial that uncovered a troubling pattern of predatory behavior.

Longstaff targeted two schoolgirls through online platforms, exploiting their vulnerability and trust.

He threatened one girl that he would circulate an intimate image he had of her unless she sent more explicit photographs.

This coercive tactic left the young victim feeling exposed, frightened, and angry, as she struggled to cope with the emotional trauma inflicted upon her.

The second girl, also just 12 years old, was so terrified by Longstaff’s threats that she chose to stay indoors with the curtains drawn, repeatedly asking her parents to lock the doors for her safety.

Her mother described her daughter as being deeply scared, noting that she had been an open and happy child before the incident but became increasingly anxious and fearful afterward.

The girl confided in her mother that she felt unsafe at home, and her anxiety persisted even after the court proceedings.

Judge James Adkin, presiding over the case, sentenced Longstaff to a year in prison.

Despite receiving positive character references, the judge emphasized that the overwhelming evidence presented during the trial revealed a darker side to Longstaff’s character.

The court uncovered that he had a significant collection of child pornography, including both images and videos, with 33 of these classified as the most serious category.

The evidence showed that Longstaff, who was only 16 when most of the offences occurred, used a social media account under a false name to target the two 12-year-olds, urging them to share indecent images of themselves.

When one girl refused to comply, Longstaff threatened to distribute an intimate image he had of her, which he later sent to a Russian website known for hosting child pornography.

This malicious act of digital blackmail and distribution compounded the severity of his crimes.

The jury convicted Longstaff on all counts, which included two charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, three counts of downloading indecent images, one count of possessing such images, and two counts of distribution.

The impact on the victims was profound.

Victim impact statements revealed that the first girl experienced sleep disturbances and her academic performance declined.

The second girl, who attended court with her mother, recounted her fear of Longstaff’s threats, stating, “I was hiding in the house with all the curtains drawn because the defendant said he would come to my house.” Her mother added that her daughter, only 12, was very scared and had become obsessed with locking all the doors, feeling unsafe even at home.

Kim Whittlestone, representing Longstaff, argued that her client’s mitigation was limited because he continued to deny the allegations.

She highlighted that Longstaff was a hardworking young man supported by his family, working at a family-run café and studying a college course aimed at enabling him to join the police force.

She suggested that most of his offending occurred when he was 16 and hinted at the possibility that he had not acted alone, citing his struggles to fit in with peers at the time.

As Longstaff was led away to serve his sentence, he was visibly emotional, weeping in court.

His name will be entered on the Sex Offender Register for ten years, and he will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, restricting his activities and contact with minors.

The case underscores the serious consequences of online predation and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
