CALLUM WALKER SENTENCED IN POWYS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AT CARDIFF CROWN COURT
A 23-year-old man from Presteigne in Powys, Callum Walker, has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of multiple child sex offences. The case, heard at Cardiff Crown Court, revealed disturbing details about Walker's manipulative behavior and his clear sexual interest in children.
Judge Paul Hobson described Walker as highly manipulative during the sentencing on Monday, September 2.
The judge emphasized that Walker used his three female victims as objects, exploiting their trust and innocence for his own gratification.
Walker, who admitted to some of the ten charges against him but denied most, was found guilty earlier this year after a trial that uncovered the extent of his offending.
The offences took place between December 2018 and September 2021, a period during which Walker was aged between 18 and 20.
His victims ranged in age from as young as 12 years old.
The court heard that Walker denied five counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and sexual communication with a child, yet the jury found him guilty of all five charges.
In addition to these, Walker admitted to two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, sexual communication with a child, possession of indecent photographs of a child, and possession of an extreme pornographic image.
A probation officer described him as a high risk to young girls, highlighting the dangerous nature of his behavior.
Prosecutor Mr.
Jones detailed how Walker began grooming two of his victims, who were friends, during the winter of 2018.
The grooming process reportedly started on Instagram when Walker first contacted one of the victims, who was only 12 years old at the time.
The communication then moved to Snapchat, where the conversations became increasingly sexual, involving the victim displaying her breasts, vagina, and backside.
Walker manipulated her into acting in this way, grooming her into a sexualized behavior pattern.
Despite some gaps in communication, the contact persisted into June 2021.
Mr.
Jones also revealed that two of the charges related to a victim whose identity has not been disclosed.
Regarding another victim, Walker lied about his age, claiming he was 17 when he was actually 20, demonstrating his continued deception and persistent communication.
Furthermore, two offences of sexual assault on a 13-year-old girl in 2021 were linked to a third victim.
The case also involved restraining orders sought by all three victims, who, notably, chose not to provide police with victim impact statements.
Defense representative Ms.
Cox acknowledged Walker’s difficult upbringing, including his father being removed from the family home, and mentioned mental health struggles during the offending period.
Ms.
Cox argued that there was some mutual exchange and roleplay involved, suggesting that one victim appeared to be content engaging with Walker and that there was a degree of reciprocation.
She emphasized that Walker’s communication was ongoing but contested the extent of manipulation, describing it as part of fantasy and roleplay.
Judge Hobson, however, was clear in his assessment, stating that Walker’s messages revealed a manipulative side.
The judge condemned Walker’s minimization of the seriousness of his actions, which he found particularly troubling.
He pointed out that Walker’s behavior prioritized his own sexual gratification over the welfare of his victims, despite the overwhelming evidence and jury verdicts.
Walker was sentenced to a total of six years in prison, with specific terms including three years for causing a child to engage in sexual activity, two years and three months for inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity, and nine months for sexual communication with a child.
These sentences are to be served consecutively.
Additional periods of 18 months, 15 months, and one month for possession of child sex images and a pornographic image of a dog will be served concurrently.
In addition to his prison sentence, the court granted restraining orders for each of the three victims, lasting ten years.
A sexual harm prevention order was also issued for the same duration.
Walker will be subject to an indefinite notification period, requiring him to inform police of any changes in his circumstances, such as a change of address.
He was also ordered to surrender his mobile phone as part of the court’s measures to prevent further offending.
