NEWQUAY MAN CALLUM POWELL CAUGHT WITH OVER 2000 CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND MOVIES

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Newquay, 24-year-old Callum Powell has been found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images and videos of children. The investigation revealed that Powell, a resident of Leader Road in Newquay, had been viewing such material since he was just 14 years old, and the quantity of illicit content on his devices is staggering.

According to court records, Powell was arrested on June 27 of the previous year, following police inquiries into his online activities. During his arrest, he was cautioned and made a series of confessions to officers, admitting to the possession and creation of indecent images. He stated to authorities that his actions were driven by curiosity rather than sexual gratification, a claim that was met with skepticism by the presiding judge.

At Truro Crown Court, Judge John Neligan scrutinized Powell’s assertions and expressed doubt about his claim of innocence. The police investigation uncovered that Powell’s collection included approximately 2,000 indecent photographs and videos, which he had downloaded over the course of a year from June 2012 to June 2013. The images ranged from mildly to highly explicit, and the material was stored on his personal laptop. Further examination revealed that Powell had been using peer-to-peer file-sharing networks to connect with other individuals who shared similar interests, raising concerns about the wider online community involved.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution, represented by Philip Lee, detailed the extent of Powell’s online activity. Lee stated that Powell had been caught with a prohibited image and had made admissions during police interviews, claiming he had never physically harmed a child but acknowledged the disturbing nature of his online behavior. Powell’s defense lawyer, Lucy Bryant, described him as a socially isolated and immature individual who had been bullied during his school years. Judge Neligan sentenced Powell to nine months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to participate in a specialized internet sex offenders program run by the probation service. Additionally, Powell was mandated to register as a sex offender and was subject to a sexual offences prevention order, aimed at preventing any future offending.
