CALLUM MUIR OF LOGAN SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ANIMAL FIGHTS INVOLVING FOXES AND BADGERS
Callum Muir, born on December 25, 1996, and residing at 17 Logangate Terrace in Logan, was convicted in 2022 of heinous animal cruelty crimes involving his three dogs and wild animals such as foxes and badgers. The disturbing case came to light after authorities uncovered videos and evidence depicting Muir encouraging his dogs to attack and fight these wild creatures, with the animals suffering immense pain and distress. In the footage, Muir was seen laughing as his dogs tore apart a fox’s skin, ripping it in half, while another man was recorded stamping on the fox’s head. The videos showcased a blatant disregard for the suffering of both the wild animals and the dogs involved. The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA) described this case as one of the most severe they had encountered in their history of animal welfare investigations.
Following the investigation, Muir was sentenced at Ayr Sheriff Court. The court heard that he had failed to seek any veterinary treatment for the injuries sustained by his three dogs—namely Pip, a terrier; Bella, a lurcher; and Mig, a bull lurcher—despite their involvement in violent fights. The Scottish SPCA expressed disappointment that Muir did not receive a longer jail term, especially considering recent legislation that allows for sentences of up to five years for animal cruelty offenses.
All three dogs were confiscated and subsequently placed in the care of the Scottish SPCA, where they have since been rehomed. The investigation into Muir’s activities began in May 2021, when the Scottish SPCA’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) executed a search at his residence on Logangate Terrace following a tip-off suggesting he was using his dogs for illegal fighting activities. During the raid, authorities discovered evidence indicating that Muir was actively self-treating the dogs’ injuries to prevent detection by law enforcement.
Examination of the seized animals revealed severe injuries. Pip and Bella had wounds across their faces, necks, and legs, with both dogs missing several teeth due to the fights. An inspector, who chose to remain anonymous, noted that the lack of veterinary care had likely worsened their suffering. Mig, the youngest and strongest of the three, bore scars on her muzzle and legs but had avoided more serious injuries thus far, possibly due to her size and strength.
Further evidence collected at the scene included various items associated with illegal animal fighting, such as locator collars used to track dogs underground in badger setts, and nets designed for capturing wild animals fleeing their dens. DNA analysis of the evidence confirmed the presence of fox and badger material. Additionally, investigators recovered multiple videos and images depicting dogs, including Muir’s own pets, engaged in violent fights with wild animals.
Animal cruelty experts expressed their horror at the case. An inspector involved in the investigation stated, “In my line of work, I see many disturbing examples of animal cruelty, but the videos and images related to this case are among the worst I’ve ever encountered.” The inspector emphasized the extent of suffering inflicted on the dogs, wild animals, and the depraved nature of the evidence collected. Despite the severity of the crimes, Muir was sentenced to only six months in jail and received an indefinite ban from owning animals.
The League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) also played a significant role in the investigation, working closely with the Scottish SPCA. Robbie Marsland, director of LACS Scotland, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “We are pleased to have contributed to bringing Callum Muir, a horrific animal abuser, to justice.” He praised the Scottish SPCA for their thorough and comprehensive investigation, which was crucial in securing the conviction and sentencing.
Overall, this case highlights the ongoing battle against illegal animal fighting and cruelty, emphasizing the importance of vigilant law enforcement and animal welfare organizations working together to protect vulnerable creatures from such barbaric acts.
