Callum Millar, aged 23, made a significant move in his personal life when he relocated to Gullane in East Lothian with his partner between December 2019 and March 2020.This period marked a new chapter for Millar, who was residing in a different part of the country, away from his hometown of Galashiels.
However, this change in residence was not properly communicated to the authorities.
Under the strict notification requirements mandated by the Sex Offenders Act, individuals in Millar’s position are legally obliged to inform police of any change in their living arrangements.
Unfortunately, Millar failed to do so, a lapse that would later have serious consequences.
His failure to notify the authorities came to light only after the end of his relationship with his partner.
When the relationship broke down, Millar moved back to his family home on Glendinning Terrace in Galashiels.
It was during this period that his former partner disclosed the details of his whereabouts and circumstances to the police, revealing that he had not kept the authorities informed about his move to Gullane.
During the court proceedings, Millar’s legal representative explained that his client’s omission was motivated by a desire to protect his privacy.
The lawyer stated that Millar’s partner was concerned about her new neighbors learning about his past, which led to his reluctance to be fully transparent with law enforcement.
The lawyer further claimed that the partner was quick to report the situation once the relationship ended, describing her actions as “vindictive.” It was also revealed that Millar is currently on remand in connection with another legal matter, which has yet to proceed to trial.
Despite this, the court found it necessary to impose a sentence for the breach of notification requirements.
Sheriff Peter Paterson sentenced Millar to eight months in prison, emphasizing the seriousness of failing to comply with legal obligations under the Sex Offenders Act.
The case underscores the importance of adhering to statutory requirements and the potential consequences of neglecting such responsibilities, especially for individuals with a history that warrants careful monitoring and reporting.
