PAEDOPHILE BROTHERS WHO SEXUALLY ABUSED YOUNG GIRLS JAILED
Bryan and Ian Wren, brothers from Derbyshire, have been sentenced to over twenty years in prison for a sustained campaign of sexual abuse against young girls.Throughout their offending, the brothers offered victims money and sweets to keep quiet while repeatedly engaging in sexual acts with them.
Now in their seventies, the siblings went on to live ordinary lives, leaving the victims deeply traumatized.
At one point, Bryan Wren called his brother after his arrest and said, “I have been a naughty boy.” During court proceedings, one survivor tearfully read her statement, stating, “you may see this as historical, but it’s not historical to me.” Judge Shaun Smith KC sentenced Bryan Wren to 13 years and four months, referencing his prior conviction for assaulting a four-year-old girl less than seven years earlier.
The judge highlighted that Wren’s actions had completely destroyed at least one victim’s life and that his continued offending, including a 2015 assault for which he served additional prison time, showed a pattern of predatory behaviour.
In sentencing Ian Wren, aged 73, to seven years, the judge commented on the enduring impact the abuse had on the second victim.
Despite her long silence, her trauma persisted, and she was devastated to learn her brother had been abusing other victims at the same time.
Her statement expressed her ongoing suffering.
Prosecutor Ricardo Childs detailed that the abuse started over 40 years ago when the victims were under age 13.
The crimes included multiple sexual touches and the brothers giving the girls small sums of money or sweets.
It was only after decades that the victims found the courage to report their experiences, resulting in charges.
One victim explained her lifelong hurt and shame, emphasizing the importance of acknowledgment, while another said her trauma led her to leave Derby to start anew.
Bryan Wren, 76, formerly of Mundy Street, Derby and now of Wilton Street, Ilkeston, pleaded guilty to a number charges including indecency with a child and sexual abuse of a girl under the age of 13.
Ian Wren, 73, of Pinfold Lane, Bradley, Ashbourne, also pleaded guilty to similar charges against his single victim.
James Varley, his barrister, said: “He worked his life on market stalls and was both a popular and well-liked man making hanging baskets for people.
He came prepared and brought a bag knowing he is going into custody.” Both men were handed lifetime sexual harm prevention orders and were placed on the sex offender register for life.
