BRUCE CORDWELL AND SHOCKING CRIMES IN NOTTINGHAM
A man from Nottingham, Bruce Cordwell, who was initially sentenced to a significant prison term for attempting to engage in sexual activities with a minor, is set to be released following a decision by the country's highest judges to reduce his sentence. This development comes after his legal challenge against the original punishment, which was handed down at Chester Crown Court earlier this year.
In February, Cordwell, residing on Raleigh Street in Nottingham, pleaded guilty to attempting to facilitate the commission of a sexual act involving a child.
His conviction stemmed from efforts to contact a teenage girl through various means, including sending her sexually explicit messages.
Despite his guilty plea, the initial sentence of 43 months imprisonment was later reconsidered, and a panel of judges at London's Court of Appeal overturned the original ruling, opting to lower the sentence to a mere 12 months.
During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that due to automatic deduction policies typically applied for good behavior and other mitigating factors, Cordwell has now effectively completed his custodial period and is scheduled for immediate release.
Given the reduction, the court has determined that his time served corresponds with the new sentence length.
The case is especially disturbing considering the background of the crime.
The 20-year-old Cordwell was involved in a disturbing attempt to establish contact with 15-year-old Kayleigh Haywood, a girl from Measham.
In the days preceding her tragic fate, Cordwell exchanged a series of sexually explicit texts with Kayleigh, which foreshadowed the horrific events that would unfold.
Kayleigh Haywood's case gained national attention after she was brutally murdered.
Her body was discovered near a lake in Ibstock, Leicestershire, five days after she was last seen departing from a bus stop close to Ibstock Community College.
The young girl’s death was later linked to Stephen Beadman, age 29, who was convicted of her murder and subsequently received a life sentence after admitting to the crime.
Further complicating the case was the involvement of 28-year-old Luke Harlow, who was initially the one to initiate contact with Kayleigh and played a role in grooming and falsely imprisoning her.
Harlow was ultimately sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for his part in the tragic ordeal.
The combined sentencing of those involved underscores the severity of the crime and the extent of the grooming and exploitation involved in the case.
