BRIAN MORGAN FROM MOSELEY JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILD IN BIRMINGHAM

In a case that has shocked the Moseley community and the wider Birmingham area, Brian Morgan, a 46-year-old former firefighter, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a young girl he was entrusted to care for. The incident took place on May 10 of the previous year, when Morgan was asked to look after a four-year-old girl while her mother was at work.

According to court reports, the young girl confided in her mother the following day, revealing that Morgan had sexually assaulted her. The mother, upon hearing this distressing account, confronted Morgan directly. Richard Franck, the prosecutor, detailed the confrontation at Birmingham Crown Court, stating, “The mother was deeply shocked and confronted the defendant. He denied it and suggested the child was lying. But the child stood up to the defendant and bravely said he did it. The mother told him to leave and he did.”

Later that same day, Morgan sought medical attention at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he confessed to the assault. The police were promptly called, and Morgan was arrested at the hospital. The court heard that the young girl continues to suffer from flashbacks and talks about the traumatic event almost daily, highlighting the lasting impact of the abuse.

During the proceedings, Gerald Bermingham, Morgan’s defense lawyer, acknowledged his client’s acceptance of responsibility. Bermingham stated, “He accepted full responsibility. He knows what happened should never have happened. He denied the offence in front of the child but, in a very short space of time, he was at the hospital admitting it.”

Morgan pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault on a child under the age of 13. Judge Rupert Mayo, presiding over the case, described the assault as “a gross breach of trust.” In his sentencing remarks, the judge emphasized the severity of the offense, noting, “The aggravating feature is that you denied it in the presence of the child which will make the task of getting over it, and that of the family, all the more harder.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Morgan was issued an indefinite sexual offences prevention order. This order prohibits him from working with children, residing in places where children are present, or allowing children into his private residence or vehicles, aiming to prevent any future harm and protect vulnerable minors from potential abuse.
