BRIAN MILBURN FROM MARSEKE DIES IN PRISON AFTER SEX OFFENDER SENTENCE IN TEESSIDE AND NORTHUMBERLAND

In a tragic turn of events, Brian Milburn, a pensioner with a dark history of predatory sexual offenses, passed away behind bars shortly after being convicted for his heinous crimes. The incident occurred in January 2009, just a month after Milburn was finally brought to justice for a series of disturbing offenses spanning over three decades.

Milburn, aged 69, was sentenced in December by Teesside Crown Court to serve six years in prison for sexually assaulting two young girls. His abuse had been ongoing for nine years, beginning more than 30 years prior to his conviction. The court heard harrowing details of his actions, which left a lasting impact on his victims. The judge, Recorder Colin Burn, described Milburn’s conduct as horrendous, emphasizing that the children he targeted were too young to comprehend the abuse until they received sex education at school.

Initially, Milburn was taken into custody at Holme House prison in Stockton. However, he was subsequently transferred to Acklington Prison, a Category C facility located in Northumberland. It was there, early last Friday, that prison authorities found Milburn collapsed in his cell. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 7:07 am. A Prison Service spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating, “Brian Milburn was found collapsed in his cell at Acklington prison at 6 am. A duty doctor was called and he was pronounced dead at 7.07 am. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. Milburn. As with all deaths in custody, the prisons and probation ombudsman will conduct an investigation.”

Milburn’s criminal history was extensive. He admitted to 17 charges of indecent assault committed between 1972 and 1981. During sentencing, his defense highlighted his health issues, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and noted that he had been residing in sheltered accommodation. The prosecution’s case was supported by testimony from victims who recounted repeated and multiple molestations over several years. Milburn’s guilty plea came on the day his trial was scheduled to commence, sparing the victims from reliving their trauma in court.

Following his conviction, Milburn was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure intended to monitor and restrict his movements due to the severity of his crimes. His death in custody has prompted an investigation by the relevant authorities, as is standard procedure in cases involving inmates who die while incarcerated. The community in Marske, where Milburn was formerly a resident on Wheatacre Close, has been left to grapple with the implications of his death and the dark history that followed him through the years.
