BRIAN LEE AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ABUSE IN READING

A headteacher has publicly expressed her profound shock and disappointment following the sentencing of a staff member at her school for serious sexual offenses.

Liz Allen, who is in charge of Altwood School in Maidenhead, conveyed her feelings of disbelief upon learning that Brian Lee, a mathematics teacher at the school, was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Friday after admitting to multiple charges of indecent assault.

The courtroom at Reading Crown Court was packed with an audience as details of the case were revealed.

Lee confessed to seven counts of indecent assault involving two young men who are now in their twenties.

It was disclosed that neither of these victims were students at Altwood School.

Over a span of ten years, the victims recounted how Lee, once a highly respected educator, had sexually abused them.

The court heard that the two men had been subjected to inappropriate touching in various locations, both over and under their clothing.

It was also brought to light that Brian Lee, aged 58 and residing on Glendevon Road in Woodley, Reading, had also been involved in extracurricular activities such as managing a boys' football team and participating in a Scout group.

During the hearing, the prosecution described an incident where Lee took a boy into his living room after a football ended up on the roof of his house.

There, the teacher engaged in indecent assault.

The court further heard that Lee had advised the victims not to tell their parents and, on occasions, would give them extra money or sweets after the abuse, with no indication that threats or coercion played a role.

Liz Allen expressed her deep sorrow regarding the incident, noting that she had already contacted parents and spoken directly to students about the matter.

She emphasized the tragic end of a career that spanned over three decades, during which Lee was known for his excellence in teaching mathematics and his support for students' academic achievements.

Allen affirmed that the majority of students’ reactions had been of sadness and disappointment, as Lee had previously been viewed affectionately and with respect.

The headteacher also highlighted that her school hoped this terrible episode would not reflect badly on the institution as a whole.

She reassured that Lee's actions did not involve students from Altwood School and that support was being provided to the affected students.

Defending Lee, solicitor Sheelagh Davies presented several references and well-wishes from supporters, emphasizing his dedication as a gifted and caring teacher.

She acknowledged that there was no evidence suggesting any involvement of other children and pointed out that Lee was unable to explain his actions.

The defense highlighted the longstanding contributions he had made to the community and his efforts in devoting many years to the betterment of young people.

In sentencing, Judge Stanley Spence described the case as one of horror and misery, emphasizing the profound violation of trust.

He acknowledged that Lee demonstrated genuine remorse and was clearly ashamed of his conduct.

The judge also recognized Lee’s desire to seek treatment for his issues but warned of the ongoing risk posed to young boys.

The judge noted the severity of the case, particularly the extended period over which the abuse took place—ten years in total, five years involving each victim.

The court described the offenses as involving grooming and seduction, with one victim deciding to end their relationship of their own accord, at which point the abusive pattern shifted.

The judge emphasized the ongoing feelings of anger and confusion among the victims, with one victim revealing that they broke their silence to prevent others from suffering similar abuse.

Throughout the case, the community, victims, and families alike were struck by the betrayal and shock caused by Brian Lee’s actions, leaving a lasting impact on everyone involved.
