BRIAN LECKEY FROM CLECKHEATON SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN BRADFORD COURT

In a case that has shocked the community of Cleckheaton and the wider Bradford area, Brian Leckey, a 57-year-old cleaner, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison after being found guilty of multiple child sex offences. The court heard that Leckey's disturbing pattern of abuse spanned several decades, with allegations dating back to 1978, highlighting a long history of predatory behavior.

Leckey's crimes came to light following an investigation into his activities at his flat located on Brooklyn Road in Cleckheaton. Over an 18-month period, from February 2001 to September 2002, he engaged in repeated acts of indecency and sexual assault against eight young boys aged between ten and 15. The court was told that Leckey would often lure boys to his residence by offering them cigarettes, creating a false sense of trust and familiarity.

Once at his flat, Leckey would show some of the boys pornographic magazines and videos, further grooming them for his abusive acts. The abuse was described as both indecent and sexual in nature, with Leckey committing these offences on multiple occasions. The case was brought to light after two victims were overheard discussing 'Dirty Bri,' which led to police investigations and subsequent charges.

During the hearing at Bradford Crown Court, prosecutor David Brooke detailed the extent of Leckey's misconduct, emphasizing the repeated nature of his offences. Leckey, who has been residing at a bail hostel in Leeds, pleaded guilty to ten counts of indecent assault and sixteen counts of indecency with a child. His guilty plea was seen as a step towards accountability, but the court acknowledged the severity of his actions.

Judge Alistair McCallum expressed his deep regret that he could not impose a life sentence on Leckey, despite his strong desire to do so. The judge stated, “I’m told that I can’t pass a sentence of life imprisonment upon you – I would dearly like to do that.” Instead, Leckey was sentenced to six and a half years in prison. Additionally, the judge ordered that Leckey must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and imposed a three-year supervision period following his release to monitor his conduct and prevent further harm.

Michael Collins, representing Leckey, conveyed that his client had expressed remorse and shame for his actions, acknowledging the gravity of his misconduct. The case has left a lasting impact on the victims and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children from predators within the community.
