CHILD RAPIST BRIAN JORDON WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS DURHAM CELL AFTER RELAYING FEARS OTHER PRISONERS WOULD ATTACK HIM AFTER FINDING OUT HIS CONVICTION DETAILS.

A child rapist was found dead in his cell at HMP Durham after fearing he would be attacked by other prisoners when details of his horrific crimes appeared online, a watchdog has found.

Brian Jordan, 60, from Newcastle, died on July 3 last year just seven days after being jailed for seven years and seven months for raping and indecently assaulting one schoolgirl and having unlawful sexual intercourse with another when he was also a youth.

For years, his offending went undetected until one of the brave survivors spoke out against her abuser and reported him to police.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) said Jordan rang his son from his cell on the morning of his death and was told the local media had reported his conviction.

The report said: “He repeatedly said he was scared he would be attacked by other prisoners." The PPO concluded that prison staff could not have foreseen his actions.

Jordan had been at Durham for three weeks.

The ombudsman found he had shown “no indication to staff that he was at risk of suicide or self-harm” and concluded: “We are satisfied that staff could not have foreseen his actions.” He was placed on the Vulnerable Prisoners wing, but staff raised no concerns about his wellbeing.

The PPO concluded that prison staff could not have foreseen his actions.

The report stated: “Mr Jordan gave no indication to staff that he was at risk of suicide or self-harm.

They would have been unaware of the contents of his last phone call until after his death.

We are satisfied that staff could not have foreseen his actions.” A post-mortem examination found he died from a suicide method and a toxicology report noted past cannabis use, but no evidence he was under the influence at the time.

At an inquest earlier this month, a jury ruled Jordan had died by suicide.

The clinical reviewer concluded that the emergency response was good, the PPO report stated.

Prisons and Probation Ombudsman Adrian Usher said: “I offer my condolences to Mr Jordan’s family and friends.”
