BRIAN DOCHERTY FROM KILSYTH FACES LONG JAIL SENTENCE FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Kilsyth, a local man named Brian Docherty, aged 51, has admitted to a series of heinous sexual offenses involving two young girls over a span of more than three years. The allegations and subsequent guilty plea were heard at Airdrie Sheriff Court, where Docherty’s actions have prompted serious concerns about his potential sentencing and the safety of children in the area.

Docherty, who resides on Rennie Road in Kilsyth, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual abuse against two female minors. The court was informed that the abuse of one girl occurred when she was between the ages of six and ten, with the incidents taking place at three different addresses within Kilsyth and nearby Cumbernauld. The offenses spanned from December 1, 2010, to May 31, 2014. During this period, Docherty engaged in acts that were described as lewd, indecent, and libidinous, involving repeated sexual assaults and inappropriate conduct.

Prosecutor Ann Francis Hilley detailed to the court how Docherty repeatedly coerced the young girl into sitting on his knee, kissed her, bathed her, and ultimately sexually attacked her on multiple occasions. These acts were carried out at various locations, indicating a pattern of predatory behavior that persisted over several years. The court was also told that Docherty admitted to these offenses, which caused significant distress to the victim.

In addition to the abuse of the first girl, Docherty also confessed to sexually assaulting a second female child on numerous occasions between April 1, 2012, and November 30, 2013. The second victim was between 10 and 11 years old at the time of the abuse. The court heard that Docherty repeatedly induced her to sit on his knee, made inappropriate comments about her underwear, and attempted to handle her private parts. These repeated offenses took place at the same three addresses in Kilsyth and Cumbernauld, further highlighting a disturbing pattern of predatory conduct.

The case also involved a third allegation, which Docherty denied. It was alleged that he sexually assaulted the first girl when she was between four and six years old. However, the Crown accepted his denial of this particular charge.

The case came to light after one of the girls confided in a friend, who then informed a teacher. The police were subsequently called, and during their investigation, the second girl revealed that she too had been abused by Docherty. This revelation prompted the authorities to take further action, leading to his guilty plea.

Sentencing for Docherty is scheduled for the end of March. Sheriff Derek O’Carroll indicated that it is “highly likely” Docherty will face a lengthy prison sentence, although he emphasized that he would keep an open mind until all reports and assessments are completed. The sheriff ordered a criminal justice social work report and a risk assessment to evaluate the potential danger Docherty poses to children in the community.

Currently, Docherty has been released on bail and is required to register as a sex offender. The case has left many in Kilsyth and the surrounding areas deeply concerned about the safety of children and the ongoing threat posed by individuals with a history of such offenses.
