BRIAN DAVID AND SHOCKING HISTORICAL ABUSE IN BRISTOL
A 78-year-old man named Brian David, residing on Wells Road in Bristol, faces the grim reality of spending the remainder of his life behind bars after being convicted of multiple historical sexual offenses. The defendant was accused of and found guilty of a serious pattern of abuse directed at a young girl over several years.
During the proceedings at Bristol Crown Court, David maintained a stance of denial, dismissing the allegations as “a load of bloody nonsense.” Despite his protests, the court heard compelling evidence that proved otherwise.
A jury convicted him of a series of sexual offenses that spanned from when the victim was just eight years old until she reached the age of 17.
His convictions include eight counts of indecent assault, three counts of rape, and two counts of buggery, reflecting a disturbing cascade of criminal behavior.
The presiding judge, Mr.
James Bromige, who oversaw the case via video link, delivered a sentencing that reflects both the severity of the crimes and the defendant’s current health status.
David was sentenced to a term of 20 years imprisonment.
In his remarks, Judge Bromige emphasized the likelihood that David would not survive his sentence, noting that the defendant’s health was poor, and he had a diminished life expectancy.
The judge explicitly stated, “You are not in good health, you have a diminished life expectancy and the prospect is you will die in prison.” In addition to the lengthy prison sentence, Brian David was ordered to register his details with police indefinitely, a legal requirement that places him under continual scrutiny.
Furthermore, he was served with an indefinite restraining order that prohibits him from having any form of contact—whether direct or indirect—with the victim who testified in court.
This measure aims to prevent any further harm or persecution of the complainant.
The victim, who was allowed to speak behind a protective screen during the trial, conveyed the profound and lasting impact of her abuse.
She shared that her ordeal had caused her to develop anxiety and depression, for which she received ongoing counseling and therapy.
She revealed that she had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition that continues to affect her daily life.
In her emotional statement, she described how the abuse haunts her: “I smell his cigarette smoke every day.
I don’t feel like getting up, I don’t eat properly, I don’t sleep properly.” She expressed her anger and despair, asserting, “He knows he is guilty.
I want him to remember every day what he did to me.
He ruined my life.” Prosecutor Nikke Coombe detailed the horrifying extent of David’s misconduct, emphasizing that he forced the young girl to engage in sexual acts with him, and that he had repeatedly assaulted her during her vulnerable years.
The court was told that she was a frightened and powerless child at the time, feeling unable to disclose the abuse to her family or friends.
In her defense, lawyer Virginia Cornwall requested that the judge impose a fixed-term sentence rather than an indeterminate one.
She argued that there was no indication of ongoing dangerousness and suggested that the risk of further offending was minimal.
She pointed out that at 78 years old, David was unlikely to pose a continuing threat if released, and thus asked for a sentence that would serve the court’s duty without being excessively harsh, given his age and health.
This case underscores the lasting scars caused by sexual abuse and highlights the importance of justice for victims of such devastating crimes.
Brian David now faces a grim future, with the court’s decision reinforcing the seriousness with which such offenses are treated in Bristol.
