BRETT WIGHT SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR RAPE IN NEWCASTLE - NORTHUMBRIA POLICE BRAVERY REWARDED
Brett Wight, aged 47, from Throckley in Newcastle, was found responsible for subjecting a woman to multiple acts of sexual assault, including rape, which resulted in her sustaining lasting physical injuries.The victim, demonstrating remarkable resilience and courage, chose to come forward and report the crimes to the authorities, despite the trauma she endured.
Following her disclosure, an immediate investigation was launched by Northumbria Police.
The case quickly gained momentum, leading to Wight being formally charged with several sexual offences last year.
His trial took place at Newcastle Crown Court, where a jury deliberated over the evidence presented during a two-week hearing.
Ultimately, Wight was convicted of four counts of rape, a verdict that underscored the severity of his crimes.
On Friday, September 20, Wight appeared once more before the court to be sentenced.
The judge handed down a substantial custodial sentence of 15 years, with an additional eight-year period of extended supervision following his release.
In addition to his prison term, Wight will be required to register as a sex offender for life and will be subject to a lifelong restraining order, prohibiting him from approaching or contacting the victim.
Following the sentencing, the victim’s sister expressed her profound gratitude towards the police officers involved in the case.
She praised Northumbria Police for their “remarkable actions,” emphasizing how their professionalism and dedication had a significant impact on her family’s healing process.
She stated, “I cannot emphasise how much of an impact the brilliance of Northumbria Police has had on my family.
I can say with all honesty we would not have had this result had it not been for your amazing police force.” She specifically highlighted Detective Constable Leo Douglas and Police Constable Kris Wightman, describing them as “the absolute guardian angels” of her sister.
She praised their care, attention, and unwavering support, calling their professionalism “astonishing.” Her words reflected her deep appreciation, asserting that these officers deserved recognition beyond any award, and expressing her desire to “scream this from the rooftops for the whole world to hear.” She further commended Northumbria Police as a whole, urging that the force be celebrated and recognized for their exceptional work.
Her gratitude extended to the entire team, and she vowed to spend her life spreading positivity about their efforts, believing her sister shares the same sentiment.
In response, Detective Constable Leo Douglas acknowledged the survivor’s incredible strength, emphasizing that her bravery was instrumental in bringing Wight to justice.
He stated, “No-one should ever have to experience what she went through at the hands of Wight, but without bravery in reporting what had happened, he would not be behind bars today and his offending may never even have come to light.” He praised her resilience and continued cooperation, calling her “incredibly proud” of her courage.
The officer also reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to protecting vulnerable victims, stressing that their priority is to ensure offenders are held accountable.
He urged other victims to come forward, assuring them that they will be listened to and supported in every way possible, reinforcing the message that no one should suffer in silence.
