BILLY RUTTER AND SHOCKING CRIMES IN MERSEYSIDE AND LIVERPOOL
Billy Rutter, a man with a long history of violent and disturbing crimes in Merseyside, has once again been brought to justice following a series of alarming incidents. The latest events occurred in Liverpool city centre, where police intervened during a violent altercation outside the Revolution bar.
According to reports from the Liverpool Echo, on the early morning hours of December 11 last year, officers on routine patrol along Victoria Street heard the sound of glass smashing nearby.
Approaching the scene around 1.15am, they observed Rutter, who was visibly intoxicated, holding a broken glass bottle.
The 35-year-old suspect initially hid the makeshift weapon behind his back as he approached a group of strangers gathered outside the bar.
Prosecutor Matthew Conway detailed how Rutter was involved in a dispute with these individuals.
Despite attempts to conceal the bottle, officers quickly moved in to detain him.
Rutter made no resistance but dropped the shattered glass onto the pavement immediately upon police proximity, indicating acknowledgment of the threat he posed.
Rutter’s criminal record is extensive and deeply troubling.
He has accumulated a total of 18 convictions across 36 separate offences.
His past includes possession of offensive weapons in public, assaults aimed at robbing others, and possession of bladed weapons in public spaces.
Notably, in 2005, Rutter was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl whom he stalked and assaulted while she waited for her mother’s lift home.
He targeted her at a bus stop on Eastern Avenue in Speke, forcibly dragging her into nearby waste ground, where he raped her after silencing her screams by covering her mouth.
During the trial, Rutter’s behavior was provocative—pointing at the jury and expressing familiarity with them, which caused distress among jurors, and provoking his brother to shout from the gallery, resulting in his ejection from court.
He was subsequently sentenced to nine years in prison for this heinous assault.
Beyond his sexual offenses, Rutter’s history also includes animal cruelty.
In February 2021, he was sentenced to 15 months after pleading guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, namely a rabbit.
The crime was particularly gruesome: Rutter had decapitated his pet rabbit and later threw its severed head at his ex-girlfriend while she was lying in bed.
The incident was so disturbing that it prompted her to flee her home with her children.
She called emergency services from a payphone while her son repeatedly said, “I miss my bunny.” Police attending the scene found the rabbit nailed above the kitchen door—a grotesque sight deemed one of the most distressing they had encountered.
When questioned, Rutter justified his actions by stating that “rabbits and chicks get slaughtered every day,” and casually mentioned that he found rabbit meat “lovely” when asked about it.
This latest incident at the Revolution bar, where Rutter was found armed with a broken glass bottle amidst a heated argument, has resulted in yet another imprisonment.
The police swiftly responded to the disturbance and successfully subdued Rutter, who dropped the weapon and was taken into custody.
His history of violent and disturbing behaviour in Merseyside remains a stark reminder of his pattern of offending and the serious threats he poses to the community.
