BENJAMIN RECIO RELEASE FEARS IN SHEFFIELD AFTER HORRIFIC RAPE CASE
In April 2021, a distressing case emerged from Sheffield involving a woman who endured a brutal and prolonged assault at the hands of Benjamin Recio. The survivor, who was held captive and raped over a seven-hour period, now fears for her safety and the safety of others as Recio is set to be released from prison next month, having served only part of his sentence.
Benjamin Recio, now 31 years old, was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2016 for his heinous crimes.
However, after spending one year on remand and completing five years of his sentence, he is eligible for early release.
The assault took place in Recio’s flat on Shirebrook Road, Meersbrook, where he repeatedly raped the victim, a woman identified as Laura.
During her ordeal, she was subjected to extreme physical abuse, including having piping hot water poured over her and a sock stuffed into her mouth to silence her screams.
Laura, who was 26 at the time, described her attacker as a ‘psychopath,’ a term she used to emphasize his lack of empathy and human emotion.
Now 32 and having completed a master’s degree in law, Laura has dedicated herself to advocating for other survivors of sexual violence.
She has initiated a petition calling for legislative changes to ensure that rapists serve their full sentences rather than being eligible for early release.
In addition to her advocacy, Laura is actively discussing with the probation service the possibility of establishing a city-wide exclusion zone in Sheffield.
She hopes that such measures will restrict Recio’s movements, including a ban on him visiting Sheffield, to prevent any potential encounters and to enhance her sense of safety.
She expressed frustration over the current legal framework, stating, “Six years in prison from a 12-year sentence is nothing compared to the devastation he caused me and my loved ones.
The sentencing guidelines are not harsh enough for such a crime, and they do not reflect the profound impact sexual assault has on victims and their families.” Laura recounted her experience of being falsely accused and stigmatized by her community after the assault, as Recio denied the rape and claimed the encounter was consensual.
She described how she was subjected to gossip and judgment, with some locals labeling her as a liar or the ‘girl who got raped,’ which she found deeply hurtful and damaging to her reputation.
She shared her struggles with the community’s misunderstanding of the criminal justice process, emphasizing how difficult it is to secure a guilty verdict in rape cases despite clear evidence.
Reflecting on her journey, Laura admitted that the aftermath of her assault and trial profoundly changed her.
She described periods of withdrawal and frustration, but over time, she has come to accept what happened and to understand that she is not to blame.
Her focus now is on channeling her experience into positive action, supporting others, and advocating for legal reforms.
She expressed her concern that her attacker, who she believes is devoid of genuine human emotion, might soon be back on the streets, which fuels her desire for stricter controls and community safety measures.
Laura also highlighted the challenges she faced during her court case, where her character and clothing were unfairly scrutinized, and the defense was allowed to portray her negatively.
She emphasized that rape is as serious as murder, with life-altering consequences, and she feels fortunate to have a strong support network.
Her hope is that her petition and efforts will prevent others from experiencing similar trauma and that legal reforms will ensure offenders serve their full sentences.
She expressed her fears for other women in Sheffield, worried that Recio’s release could put them at risk, and called for action to protect the community.
