MAIDSTONE MAN BENJAMIN KIRKHAM CAUGHT IN WELSH UNDERCOVER POLICE SEX STING
In a disturbing case that unfolded across the border between Wales and Maidstone, Benjamin Kirkham, a 48-year-old resident of Linden Road in Maidstone, found himself at the center of a serious criminal investigation involving online sexual communications with individuals he believed to be underage girls.The incident came to light when Kirkham was engaging in explicit conversations with what he thought were two schoolgirls, both aged 13.
These interactions took place over online platforms, where he attempted to coax one of the girls into performing a sexual act.
According to Maidstone Crown Court, Kirkham's actions included asking the girl to perform a sex act on herself, a request that underscores the severity of his misconduct.
Unbeknownst to Kirkham, the individuals he was communicating with were actually undercover police officers operating in Wales.
These officers had set up decoy accounts as part of an ongoing operation aimed at catching individuals attempting to engage minors in sexual activities online.
During the investigation, Kirkham used the alias 'London Daddy' while chatting with the decoy accounts, which were presented as 13-year-old females.
The prosecutor, Daniel Cohen, explained that the police's division in South Wales had been monitoring these communications.
He stated, “These offences relate to the communications with decoy accounts operated by a division of the south Welsh police force.” Cohen further detailed that Kirkham initiated contact by asking the supposed schoolgirl to perform a sexual act and also engaged in conversations with another officer posing as a young girl.
The police arrested Kirkham in July of the previous year after he claimed he believed the girls he was chatting with were older than they actually were.
Evidence from the chat logs revealed that despite the decoy officers informing him that they were 13 years old, Kirkham continued to ask for photographs of the girls, indicating a clear intent to pursue sexual contact.
The judge, Robert Lazarus, emphasized the gravity of Kirkham’s actions, stating, “You were involved in sexualised chats with undercover officers, covering topics including nudity and sex.” As part of his sentencing, Kirkham was handed a 23-month jail term, which was suspended for two years.
Additionally, he was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work, pay court costs amounting to £1,500, and was required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat online sexual exploitation and the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from predatory behavior.
