BEN SMITH FROM CARLISLE SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AT RICKERGATE COURT
In May 2021, a 26-year-old man from Carlisle was formally charged and subsequently admitted to possessing a significant collection of child abuse images.The individual, identified as Ben Smith, resides on Green Lane in the Belle Vue area of Carlisle.
His case was heard at Rickergate Court, where he pleaded guilty to multiple counts related to the possession of indecent images of children.
Ben Smith was found to have in his possession a total of 102 Category A indecent images, which are classified as the most severe and disturbing type of child abuse material.
These images were dated back to November 2018.
In addition to these, he also possessed 55 Category B images, which are considered less severe but still highly inappropriate, and 175 Category C images, which are the least severe but nonetheless illegal.
All these images were linked to the same time period, indicating a sustained collection over several months.
Furthermore, Smith admitted to possessing 66 prohibited images of children, which are images that are illegal to possess regardless of their content or context.
The nature of these images and the extent of his collection prompted serious concern from the court.
Following his admission, magistrates at Rickergate Court decided to refer his case to the Crown Court for a more detailed sentencing hearing.
The hearing was scheduled for June 1, where a judge will determine the appropriate punishment considering the gravity of his offenses and the impact of his actions.
