CHELTENHAM MAN BEN PASS SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG GEORGIE

Ben Pass, a resident of Elmfield Avenue in Cheltenham, was found guilty in 2024 of subjecting his dog, Georgie, a Jack Russell terrier, to repeated acts of cruelty and physical abuse. The case drew significant attention due to the disturbing nature of the evidence and the well-documented history of Pass’s mistreatment of his pet.

Pass, who has a longstanding familiarity with Gloucestershire Constabulary, was caught multiple times on CCTV footage engaging in violent acts against Georgie. Witnesses provided detailed accounts of the abuse, describing scenes where the dog was seen hanging from her lead, suspended off the ground, and crying out in distress. In one incident, Pass was observed punching the dog, further illustrating the severity of the abuse.

Additional witnesses reported even more disturbing acts, including seeing Georgie being swung around by her neck with her feet lifted off the ground, and being throttled. Others recounted instances where the dog was kicked, adding to the evidence of sustained cruelty. These accounts painted a clear picture of ongoing violence inflicted upon the defenseless animal.

A veterinary expert reviewed the footage and provided a detailed report on the injuries and suffering caused. The vet stated, “This series of physical attacks will have caused the dog unnecessary pain, especially around the neck when suspended in the air, and suffering. Vocalisation by the dog was reported on several occasions as an indicator of pain and suffering. It is also important to understand the considerable emotional stress on the dog from repeated acts of violence, both threatened and actual.”

The veterinarian emphasized that there were no justifiable reasons for such repeated, unprovoked attacks, describing them as a pattern of aggressive behavior that involved both threats and actual physical violence towards a protected animal. The report highlighted the emotional and physical toll inflicted on Georgie, underscoring the cruelty of Pass’s actions.

RSPCA Inspector Richard Carr commented on the case, stating, “Every animal deserves kindness. Sadly Georgie didn’t experience the care and kindness she deserved but we were here for her and able to investigate and prosecute her owner.”

Following the court proceedings, Georgie was placed into the care of an animal charity, where she will be available for rehoming. The court sentenced Pass to six weeks in prison and imposed a ban on him owning or keeping any animals for a period of ten years, a restriction that will last until July 2034. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of cruelty.
