BEN MOONEY FROM DUBLIN CAUGHT IN CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL
In March 2019, Ben Mooney, a resident of Dublin, was placed under a two-year probation bond as part of his legal proceedings. The case against him gained significant attention due to the serious nature of the allegations involving child exploitation and possession of explicit images.
Earlier, in October 2018, Mooney, then 22 years old, faced charges related to the online solicitation and possession of child abuse images.
He was accused of using a false online identity, specifically the name “Nicole Heffernon,” to contact teenage boys via Facebook.
Gardaí revealed that Mooney engaged in a practice known as “catfishing,” which involves pretending to be someone else online to deceive others.
His goal was to lure teenage boys into sharing explicit photographs of themselves, which included images of them in their underwear and naked.
The investigation uncovered that Mooney had also obtained videos of the teenagers masturbating.
According to Gardaí, Mooney admitted to having contacted as many as 15 teenage boys over a span of two years before his arrest.
He resided at Rathsallagh Park, Shankill, and pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to charges of knowingly possessing child pornography.
The evidence presented indicated that on January 5, 2016, Mooney’s Samsung mobile phone contained approximately 4,000 images and 300 videos of child pornography.
It was noted that he had no prior criminal convictions.
Gardaí, represented by Gda Tracey, explained that the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in the United States had alerted Irish authorities about two email addresses sharing child abuse material.
One of these email addresses was registered under the alias “Nicole Heffernon,” while the other was linked to a 16-year-old boy.
During the course of the investigation, Gardaí interviewed the teenage boy, along with two other males aged 16 and 15.
These individuals disclosed that they had been contacted through Facebook by someone pretending to be a 16-year-old girl, who had been sending them explicit content.
Further forensic analysis traced the IP address associated with the “Nicole Heffernon” email back to Mooney’s residence.
Gardaí obtained a search warrant for his home, where Mooney and his parents were present.
During the search, Mooney requested his parents to leave him alone with the officers, after which he confessed to having contacted up to 15 teenage boys over the previous two years.
Gardaí also recovered two mobile phones and a computer hard drive during the search.
Gardaí revealed that approximately 70% of the 6,000 images stored on Mooney’s devices were a mixture of pornography and child pornography.
The images fell into the lower levels of the child exploitation scale, depicting children in erotic poses, engaging in solo masturbation, and participating in sexual activities with other minors.
A significant portion of the material involved young males aged between ten and sixteen years old.
During proceedings, Gda Tracey acknowledged that Mooney had made full admissions prior to forensic analysis of his devices.
It was also noted that Mooney was 19 years old at the time of the offenses and was reportedly struggling with issues related to his sexuality.
Gardaí further observed that Mooney’s lifestyle at the time was characterized by staying awake all night playing computer games and sleeping during the day.
Judge Melanie Greally ordered a report from The Probation Service and decided to adjourn the sentencing hearing until January.
At that time, she will consider a plea in mitigation from Mooney’s defense lawyer, Seán Guerin SC, as the case continues to be closely monitored by the court.
