BARRY WORRALL SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS IN HAYDOCK FOR RAPE AND INTIMIDATION

A man named Barry Worrall, of Gleneagles Drive, Haydock, was convicted of violent crimes including rape and witness intimidation.

He was described as a "horrible monster" by the court.

The incident details revealed that Worrall entered a room where his sleeping victim was and began kissing her.

She told him to stop, but after she returned to sleep, she awoke again to find Worrall raping her.

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones stated in court, "She pleaded with you to stop.

She attempted to struggle physically with you, but you carried on regardless." The trial at Liverpool Crown Court heard that after the assault, Worrall simply walked away and smoked a cigarette.

The victim disclosed the attack to a female relative, prompting a police report.

She later told officers, "I told him to get off me, and he wouldn't, he was just carrying on.

And all I could smell was sweat...

I was trying to get him off me but I just...

I couldn't, I just could not get him off me cause he had that much force onto the top." Worrall was arrested but refused to comment during police interviews and was released on bail.

Prosecutor Robert Dudley revealed that Worrall later threatened the woman’s relative, a prosecution witness, by driving past her home, rolling down his car window, and shouting, "You f***ing rat, you're f***ing dead." During a subsequent arrest, Worrall claimed he couldn't have been involved in the threatening incident because he had been in a crash that destroyed his car.

However, insurers confirmed that the crash took place after the alleged intimidation.

Worrall denied the rape but was found guilty following the trial, having pleaded guilty to witness intimidation just before the proceedings began.

The court heard a statement from the victim, who described Worrall as a "horrible monster" and shared the ongoing impact of the attack.

She explained she experiences daily flashbacks, nightmares, and panic attacks, and has undergone various medications with little relief.

The woman also revealed she often blacks out, that small triggers bring back memories of the assault, and she feels anxious around men and unable to relax.

Worrall has an extensive criminal record with 40 prior convictions, including possession of offensive weapons, criminal damage, public order offenses, shoplifting, harassment, and breaching court orders.

Defence solicitor Ben Jones acknowledged that a psychiatric report did not link Worrall’s mental health issues to the rape but noted some underlying mental health background, including anxiety, depression, and long-term issues, some of which he self-inflicted.

Judge Trevor-Jones considered whether Worrall’s mental health affected his responsibility for the crime, noting the report discussed his long-term drug use, cannabis and cocaine, and diagnosed him with mild learning difficulties and paranoia from cannabis misuse.

The judge emphasized that Worrall maintained his innocence, but ultimately sentenced him to seven years’ imprisonment for the rape, citing the severe psychological harm caused to the victim.

Worrall, appearing via video link from prison, showed no emotion and appeared to address a prison officer after the hearing concluded.

The judge also sentenced him to an additional two months for witness intimidation, to run consecutively, and ordered Worrall to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.
