BARRY WILEY SENTENCED IN LIVERPOOL FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES
A 53-year-old man named Barry Wiley from Everton, Liverpool, attempted to engage in sexual activity with a girl he believed was 13 years old.Wiley claimed he was willing to travel 40 miles to have sex with the girl, who was actually a decoy set up by the paedophile hunter group Elusive Child Protection Unit.
Wiley contacted the decoy, using the social media profiles Hi5 and Tagged, with a manipulated childlike photo.
Prosecutor Frank Dillon explained that Wiley used the alias "TheQuietMan69" and started conversations with the decoy, Maddison, on June 30, 2020.
She told him she was 13 and felt she had few friends.
When asked if he was a teacher, Wiley replied, "Couldnt be a teacher wouldn't be able to focus." Over the following days, Wiley discussed alcohol making him "horny," shared sexual content, and expressed his desire to meet her.
He asked Maddison to download messaging apps like Kik Messenger and Hangouts, and shared increasingly explicit images, including a photo of a man in underwear and a picture of himself in the bath with his private parts exposed.
Despite Maddison expressing fear and saying she was "scared," Wiley continued to push for a sexual encounter.
He sent her sexual images, including photos of adults engaging in sexual activities and female genitalia.
He offered to pay for her train fare to Liverpool and proposed meeting her in Liverpool or Rochdale, intending to have sex with her in her mother's bed.
Police from the Elusive Child Protection Unit arrested Wiley at a snooker club in Liverpool on July 25, 2020, after they located him.
Wiley was interviewed but gave no comment.
However, in May 2023, he admitted to attempted sexual communication with a child, attempting to cause a child to view sexual activity, and trying to organize a child sex offence.
Initially, his guilty plea qualified him for a 25% reduction in his sentence, but he later tried to withdraw it.
The withdrawal was refused, and he received a prison sentence of three years and nine months.
Wiley was also ordered to register as a sex offender and comply with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Judge Louise Brandon remarked that Wiley was in denial about his actions, continuing to deny the offences and displaying no remorse, only concern about his current situation.
Judge Brandon stated that Wiley posed a danger to children and had continued to bombard Maddison with sexual messages for his own gratification, showing no real understanding of the harm he might have caused if she had been real.
