BARRY HODGSON'S SHAMEFUL CRIME IN CARLISLE LEADS TO SUICIDE ATTEMPT AND JAIL TIME
In August 2003, the town of Carlisle was shaken by a disturbing incident involving Barry Hodgson, a 30-year-old man whose actions led to serious legal consequences and a dramatic suicide attempt.Police officers arrived at Hodgson's residence on Merith Avenue to arrest him on charges of indecently assaulting a 13-year-old girl.
Upon entering his home, authorities discovered that Hodgson had attempted to take his own life out of overwhelming shame and remorse for his actions.
It was revealed that Hodgson had written a detailed confession along with two suicide notes prior to his overdose and self-inflicted arm injuries, which he hoped would end his life.
His attempt was ultimately unsuccessful, but it underscored the profound distress and guilt he was experiencing.
Following his arrest, Hodgson appeared before Carlisle Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charge of indecent assault.
The court sentenced him to 18 months in prison.
Additionally, Hodgson was handed an indefinite ban from working with children and was ordered to register as a sex offender with the police for a period of ten years.
During the proceedings, it was disclosed that this was not Hodgson's first encounter with the law concerning sexual misconduct.
Records showed that he had previously been cautioned at age 15 for indecently assaulting a three-year-old child.
His criminal history also included being dismissed from a job due to sexual harassment of a female colleague and a probation sentence last year for groping a 40-year-old woman at the hostel where he was residing at the time.
In his defense, Hodgson's solicitor, Greg Hoare, stated that Hodgson was “shocked and revolted” by his own actions, particularly the incident involving the 13-year-old girl, who was reportedly lying on her mother’s bed to recover from a coughing fit when Hodgson committed the assault.
Judge John Phillips addressed the court, emphasizing the gravity of Hodgson’s behavior.
He described Hodgson as “a man who acts in a grossly inappropriate way” towards women, highlighting the serious nature of his misconduct and the impact it had on the victim and the community of Carlisle.
