BARRY FERGUSON AND SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE IN PLYMOUTH

A Royal Navy sailor named Barry Ferguson, aged 40, who was found to possess hundreds of horrific images involving children, has narrowly escaped imprisonment.

The disturbing details of Ferguson's actions came to light during a court hearing in Plymouth, where it was revealed that he had been systematically downloading videos depicting the sexual abuse of infants and children as young as 18 months old, as well as explicit content involving animals.

According to court records, Ferguson engaged in this depraved activity over a period exceeding seven years.

Many of the videos he accessed lasted around 20 minutes, illustrating some of the most heinous forms of abuse.

The fact that he continued this criminal behavior for such an extended period highlights a disturbing pattern of predatory interest.

Ferguson's actions caused considerable concern, given the young age of the victims depicted in the material.

Despite the severity of his offenses, Ferguson, who is on the verge of leaving the Royal Navy, was not sentenced to jail.

Instead, he was released from Plymouth Crown Court with a community order.

The judge overseeing the case emphasized that Ferguson had no prior criminal record, which was considered a mitigating factor.

The court was told that Ferguson had admitted his guilt voluntarily and had already begun participating in counselling sessions aimed at addressing his issues.

Furthermore, Judge William Mousley acknowledged Ferguson’s personal circumstances during the sentencing.

He noted that Ferguson is also a carer for his disabled wife, which added complexity to the case.

While the judge condemned the content found on Ferguson’s devices—describing the images as including “moving images” and featuring young children suffering visible pain and distress—he also recognized Ferguson’s cooperation with law enforcement from the earliest stages.

The judge stated, “Factors reducing the sentence are the absence of previous convictions, the fact that you cooperated fully with the police right from the start, even before the devices were examined, and your ongoing efforts to seek help for your troubling behaviour.” As a result, Ferguson was given a three-year community order that includes attendance at a sex offender treatment programme and participation in the Rehabilitation Activity Requirement supervised course by probation services.

Additionally, Ferguson was required to pay prosecution costs amounting to £1,200.

The detailed court proceedings revealed that Ferguson pleaded guilty to three counts of making or downloading indecent images of children, which were committed between October 2015 and May 2021.

Authorities discovered a total of 332 images, including more than 300 films, categorized in the most severe level, Category A, depicting children being sexually abused.

The collection also included 13 images in Category B and two in Category C.

Law enforcement officials obtained a warrant to search Ferguson’s residence on June 2 of the previous year after receiving information about the presence of indecent images associated with his IP address.

The investigation uncovered these images stored on his laptop and a hard drive connected to his computer.

Ferguson’s own admissions confirmed that he had been viewing such material for about seven or eight years, dating back to after the breakdown of his first marriage.

Among the graphic content found were videos ranging from 13 to 25 minutes long, featuring children aged between 18 months and four years being subjected to sexual abuse.

The police reports detailed that Ferguson had actively searched for such disturbing material online, indicative of a troubling obsession.

Representing Ferguson, solicitor Will Willden explained that his client was set to leave the Royal Navy in June, emphasizing Ferguson’s prior service and his role as a father with two children from a previous relationship.

He stated, “He has served in the Armed Forces for a significant period.

He is currently on termination leave.

The Royal Navy is reviewing this conviction and the judge's comments, and Ferguson will be discharged accordingly.” In addition to the community order, the court ordered the forfeiture and destruction of Ferguson’s devices, which included the laptop and hard drive used to store the offensive images.

To further restrict his future actions and ensure ongoing monitoring, Ferguson was imposed with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years, allowing law enforcement authorities to track his internet activity.

He will also remain on the Sex Offender Register for the same period, underlining the ongoing safeguarding measures surrounding his case.
