BARRY DAVIS PLEADS FOR HELP AFTER PLYMOUTH CHILD SEX OFFENSES
In February 2011, a disturbing case involving a pensioner from Plymouth, Barry Davis, came to light, revealing the extent of his criminal activities related to child abuse.Davis, aged 66, was found to have committed multiple heinous acts involving young girls, leading to a complex legal and psychological situation.
According to court reports, Davis had previously admitted to four separate charges of engaging in sexual activities with a girl under the age of 13.
In addition, he faced two similar allegations involving a second young girl.
The severity of his offenses was further compounded by five specimen charges of possessing child pornography, illustrating a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
Prosecutor Sophie Baker detailed the circumstances of Davis's arrest, revealing that officers apprehended him while he was actively abusing one of the young girls.
During the investigation, authorities seized Davis's computer, which contained a significant collection of illegal images.
Both girls involved in the case provided statements indicating that Davis had repeatedly indecently touched them, causing profound emotional and physical harm.
In interviews with police, Davis reportedly confessed to a disturbing preference for dressing as a child and admitted to fantasizing about being a child himself.
The police investigation uncovered a vast trove of illegal material on his computer, including 795 images classified at level one, 29 at level two, eight at level three, and two at level five—the most serious category of child exploitation images.
Legal representatives for Davis, including Jo Martin, argued that her client was genuinely remorseful and described him as “a broken man.” In a heartfelt letter to Judge Paul Darlow, Davis expressed remorse, acknowledging that his actions had devastated everyone around him.
His wife, who stood by him throughout the proceedings, stated she would not hesitate to report him if he re-offended.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Darlow addressed the court and the public gallery, emphasizing the profound hurt caused by Davis’s actions.
While acknowledging the natural desire for a lengthy prison sentence, the judge explained that immediate incarceration of 12 months would likely result in Davis’s early release, given that he had already spent 83 days in custody on remand.
The judge expressed concern that such a short sentence would not serve as an effective deterrent or provide the necessary treatment.
Instead, Judge Darlow imposed a three-year supervision order, which would enable the Probation Service to enforce participation in a Sex Offenders’ Programme.
Additionally, Davis was subjected to an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order and was ordered to register on the Sex Offenders’ Register.
The judge issued a stern warning, stating, “You go anywhere near any little girl and your feet will not touch the ground,” underscoring the seriousness of the court’s stance on his future conduct.
