BARRY DALTON AND HIS BRUTAL CRIMES IN PERTH
A 40-year-old used car salesman named Barry Dalton has been sentenced to a total of ten years and six months in prison after being found guilty of multiple heinous crimes committed in Perth. His conviction follows a series of violent and predatory acts, most notably a brutal attack on a teacher that took place in November of the previous year.
Dalton was convicted in the High Court of Perth for the “brutal and sustained attack” carried out against the teacher, along with several other violent offences.
The jury found him guilty of abducting and assaulting the woman over the course of two days in November, during which he subjected her to physical violence, sexual assault, and psychological torment.
The court proceedings detailed that Dalton forcibly detained the teacher at an address located on Dunkeld Road in Perth on the nights of November 17 and 18.
During the incident, Dalton’s actions were described as exceptionally aggressive and violent.
He reportedly kicked and punched his victim, brandished a pair of scissors and a plank of wood, and engaged in disturbing acts of violence including biting and scalping her, as well as compressing her throat in an attempt to incapacitate her.
The assault culminated in him repeatedly raping the woman in a manner described by the court as both brutal and prolonged.
The victim testified that she was paralyzed with fear, choosing not to leave her hiding spot when Dalton descended downstairs for a brief period because she was terrified he might kill her.
After managing to escape, she reported the assaults to police, which set in motion a wide-ranging investigation.
The police inquiry uncovered not only the attack on the teacher but also linked Dalton to other violent offences against women.
The investigation revealed a pattern of violent behaviour, leading to further charges and convictions.
Among these was his recent conviction for breaking into the flat of a man named Tamas Bagi in Perth, during which Dalton punched the occupant and waved a knife at him.
This incident occurred just days before his attack on the teacher.
Additionally, Dalton was found guilty of assaulting several women, including a woman he previously dated.
Throughout the trial, Dalton’s defence attorney, Ronnie Renucci, acknowledged the gravity of his client’s actions.
Renucci stated that Dalton “accepts his behaviour was outrageous” and expressed that Dalton had asked him to convey an apology to the victims through the court.
Despite this, the court emphasized the severity of Dalton’s crimes.
In delivering the sentence, Lord Glennie highlighted the seriousness of Dalton’s offences.
He remarked that Dalton had been convicted of a series of assaults against vulnerable young women, with the attack on the teacher being particularly brutal and enduring.
Lord Glennie noted Dalton’s apparent anger management issues, but emphasized that such issues did not justify or excuse the level of violence and sexual assault inflicted.
The judge underlined that any rape involving the use of force warrants a lengthy custodial sentence, especially when accompanied by severe physical violence.
He made it clear that Dalton’s conduct was unacceptable and warranted strict punishment to serve as a deterrent for such violent behaviour in the community.
